Logical Response: If you're never home to use stuff, why bother buying more.

Realistic Response: Get a large air compressor, a heavy duty welding/fab table with =>1" thick top, or save a bunch more and wait for a used bridgeport.

I find it hard to believe that you have every hand tool or grouping of tools <$1k or a quantity that is acceptable to you... if you do then I want to know how the hell you have room to store ita ll  :flipoff2:

I am constantly finding new hand tools $50 or less that I need... adds up quick, and is well under $1k.

I dont have 3 phase either but I just bought a 14X54 CNC Knee Mill

And I didnt spend much more than your budget!!! But I have been waiting for a deal like this to come along for a long time now.

You should be able to find a Brigeport for under $1500 if you look hard enough. i know of at least 5 that slipped by me for less than $500.

Hell there was one in the local paper (Arkansas Democrat Gazette) this week for $1500. It was a 1970 model with a 1 HP motor.... but it was there. That's driving distance from LA...

I have a mill like that (bought it for $150). I don't recommend a round column milling machine if you have the option... problem is, when you raise the head, your x-y index gets thrown off, and you have to mess with it some more to get it set back up.

That said, the mill does do its job, but I try as hard as I can not to have to raise/lower the head while working with it.

Harold Phipps

If your heart is set on a mill, find a good used Bridgeport!!!
In my opinion, you still don't have a band saw.
Get a good sturdy 7x11 capacity band saw. Look for used with mitering head, not vice. THEN you will have a band saw.

Based on this picture, I'd say shop lighting would be a wise investment:flipoff2:

Porta-bands are bad ass tools, but don't buy one from Harbor Fail Tools, mine lasted 15 minutes, the second one broke before it touched metal, third time I wised up and got my money back and bought a Milwakee.

One important factor is, what kind of projects do you typicaly do? What tool do you find yourself lacking? I know I'd never get much use out of a small lathe or small mill, I just don't need to mill or turn any small items. If I were in your shoes I'd pick up a good notcher, a press and maybe a plasma.

I was thinking the same thing from the beginning. If you really have cash to blow -- buy BETTER tools. I'm a penny pincher, but I really try hard not to buy cheap crappy Hf stuff. I want my stuff to last for years of recreational usage.

Fromn the pictures of your shop, spend the $1000 on storage and organization. You'll be able to get more done in your time off if the place isn't a wreck! :flipoff2:

If I had a $1000.00 extra to spend it would be paid on the highest interest bill I had to pay it down.

Only if all debt was paid off would I spend it in any other way

Perhaps put it toward the winter heating bill or electric bill :grinpimp:
