Let me first say that am I total noob to D60 axles. I started disassembly on this rusty arse Dodge D60 today. It's an older one judging by the jam nuts on the spindle. I tore down one side and slid the axle out only to hear that familiar sound of rust sliding on rust...... Crap. Looking inside the axle it looks like the tube has been filled with water right up to the inner axles seal. There was is some rust flaking off the inside of the tube about where the inner C is welded also.
Should I be concrened about this much rust weakening the axle tube, especially that close to the inner C? I'm realy hoping the 14B is in better shape......
Thanks,
Mike

just see how much. there is a lot of metal there. So depending on how deep it is Might not have to worry about it. The carrier is ok i'm guessing.

I dug the loose rust and oil-mud out of mine with a toilet brush on a stick and then I reamed the tubes with a cylinder hone welded onto the end of a steel rod that I spun in a drill. The result was pretty clean.

Mike,
I would not worry to much about the axle tube. It is 1/2" wall so I think you'll be okay. Have you had a chance to see inside the pumpkin?

Not been in the diff yet..... Still tryin' to get the passenger side hub broke loose to see what it looks like. That's the side that doesn't turn :shaking: so there's no tellin' what shape it's in. I'll get it cleaned up as much as possible tonight and see if I can find my micrometer and see how much steel is left.....

Don't worry about it at all. It's fairly common.

You can buy some tube end seals from Mad Mac, a vendor on here, so that junk doesn't seep past the factory dust shields in the future. I think Seals-It may also sell them but haven't checked lately.

Yeah Seals-it carries greasable seals for the end of the tubes at the inner c's. Very cool. It is a two seal design. If anything makes it though the outer seal, it is forced back out when the seal is greased.
I would not worry about the rust. Like was mentioned earlier, there is lots of metal there. Just clean it and seal it to prevent the rust from continuing further.
