: Swift Ignitor / Coil Assembly Confusion

As some may know, I was searching for a 2.5 V6 to stuff into my Sami. I did not succeed. This plan is not dead, but will have to be postponed until more Grand Vitaras start showing up totalled in the junkyards. In the meantime, IŽve settled upon a 1.6 16 valve from a Swift. My long-term plan now is to install this motor and run with it. Then, when I find a V6, IŽll rip it all out ans sell it to finance the swap........

Now to my current problem.......

Presently, I have both the original Sami wiring harness and the Swift harness draped across the engine compartment of my rig. I have come across a difference that has left me bewildered. It turns out that the number of wires on the connector to the ignitor is different between the two harnesses. The Samurai harness has 03 wires to this connector and the Swift harness has 04 wires. The connectors themselves are the same, that is, it would be possible to plug the Swift harness directly to the ignitor.

I have the FSMs for both vehicles, but the ignitor is shown as merely a black box in the schamatics. Therefore, I have no way to determine what this extra wire does. Does anyone know what I should do?

Use the original 03 wire connector on the original ignitor / coil?? If this is correct, then which wire do I NOT connect that comes from the Swift harness??

Use the 04 wire connector on the original ignitor / coil?? If this is correct, will the ECM get confused from not having the 4th wire connected to anything??

Use a Swift 1.6 coil assembly and the 04 wire connector?? If this is correct (and I suspect that it just may be), then IŽll have to find a coil.............

I am thinking you need to swap the whole harness, ECU, everything. Just wire in the battery and key-start inputs if you can. Or, trace out the 4th wire and see where it goes - you could try a signal inducer ( used to trace phone lines through walls ) if you don't want open things up, or just apply some voltage to he wire and touch a test light to other points untill you find the place it is going to.

I am switching out everything, the harness and ECU. The problem is this 4th wire.

Good suggestion. IŽll trace the 03 wires on the original harness to find out where they go. Then IŽll trace the 04 wire on the Swift harness to try and find som sort of corelation, thereby at least identifying which one would be the elusive 4th wire and perhaps even what it does...

In any event, the more I think about it, itŽd prolly be best just to get ahold of a Swift coil assembly and swap it out as well.

Thanks!!;)

Yes, I would try to keep the ECU thinking nothing has changed. So much the electronics are integrated throughout the system. The 4th wire may be a key signal, only produced by the particular coil/ignitions system.
