: Volunteers for 2010 KOH
surveyboy 10-21-2009, 11:47 AM Well, ya wanna be part of the race you say??
Here's your chance.
We are looking for volunteers for the 2010 King of the Hammers Race.
There are things going on all week that we can use help with, but the biggest is the race itself on Friday Feb 12.
We need people and Rigs to man checkpoints, road xings and other misc duties.
Race day will likely go into the evening at some areas.
you do not have to have a rig to get to any of the checkpoints or to volunteer. we can get you to any checkpoint that you would be assigned to.
If you Have a 2m race radio capable of transmitting and recieving in the 151.475mhz range and can bring it out with your rig, that would be great, please let me know.
So, if you're interested, post up here and let me know.
Thanks.

Danger Ranger 10-21-2009, 02:39 PM I did it last year and had a great time. It's a great way to get an inside look at the race ;) Winning some brand new winch rope from Viking at the Volunteer Raffle was cool too :D

LarryS 10-22-2009, 11:42 AM Sweet raffle last year.
The only raffle I have ever seen where they keep drawing tickets until there are no more tickets in the hat. Thanks Viking and Poly Performance for my shwag.
surveyboy 10-22-2009, 12:46 PM We had a lot of great donations for the raffle last year.

There were multiple Ready Welders and a Premiere Power Welder as well ;)
mywillys 10-22-2009, 01:12 PM By manning checkpoints and stuff, do you mean just pointing people in the right direction and helping lost souls or what?
What day is the absolute latest to be there besides Friday? Thursday? morning?
Put me down, I will make some room in my schedule somehow :smokin:
Roxywheels 10-22-2009, 01:13 PM Now is your chance to work with me! :D The pay sucks, the hours suck but the job kicks ass and I will even feed you lunch  And if you are nice I might even let you drive my pretty pink RZR! :D
Ok, seriously...working the race is an experience that many would love to have. It's amazing to see everything up close and personal. And when the DVD comes out, you sit back and think *man, I was a part of that*. Does miss out on your chance :roxy:
matzell 10-22-2009, 01:17 PM I will be out there all week, I might be able to help up to thursday, but I plan on riding in Camo's buggy on friday:grinpimp:

checkpoints for the race will be stoping the racecars, logging their time and thier number and sending them on thier way.
can't get much closer to the action :D
we're planning on having a meeting Thrusday evening that we'd like to have everyone attend... however, if circumstances dictate you can't get there until late, we usually start sending people to their positions on course by 8am or earlier.

BigWoodyWag 10-22-2009, 01:25 PM Having helped Surveyboy & Dave hand out the Volunteer Raffle booty, it was EPIC!!! I couldnt believe some of the stuff that the Vendors pitched in. Axles, tires, wheels, bumpers, more hats, shirts, stickers, tow straps than you could shake a Roxy at.
Danger Ranger 10-22-2009, 01:33 PM :homer:
forgot to mention the raffle and the tacos on the night before the race also :D
Yeah somehow the word about Taco's never made it over to me... I had to steal some pizza from a friend and kept techin' the "cars". Which btw is a term I hate.

LOL, you weren't paying attention then :D

that's worth not getting a couple of tacos right?? :D

yotd1976 10-22-2009, 02:49 PM how far is this event from the san diego airport? would be neat if i could pull this off coming from hawaii.
Jeff Knoll 10-22-2009, 03:17 PM There are a lot of volunteer positions. Some of the positions require past experience with Hammerking. I won't list those, but if you have been involved in the race the last year or two and would like to step up to a bigger role just let Shawn know.
Some of the volunteer positions are as follows;
Check point worker;
Works one of the multiple check points on the race track. Some positions require an early start sub sunrise, or late finish, well past dark. Workers will be responsible for stopping all racers and verifying number, recording data, and reporting to the scoring director. We will staff a check point with multiple parties as to allow plenty of breaks, and time to enjoy the race. This job can be hectic depending on which check point. Early check points get the action, later check points run a little slower, but are more important as we get down to the leaders of the race.
Check point captain;
Management of check point workers, and use of race radio. Best for experienced volunteers but not required.
Pit stop captain, and assistant.
Management of safety in the pits. Verify use of fuel mats and proper storage of fluids. Pit stop captain may have to report issues to the race director. Make sure Pit crews do not drive down the course to retrieve a racer until the area has been closed to racers.
Road crossing workers and Capitan; Just what the name says. Make sure the racers don't run into a car driving on the road. This year we will have to make sure we are on top of two road crossing at the end of the race. Both are access to remote pits that cross the race course.
In addition to the main race we need to fill positions for the UTV race and the LCQ race. If you want to get as close as possible to the race teams this is how you do it.
As in the past Thursday night is the Volunteers night. We have hosted a special dinner and raffle just for the volunteers, and the racers will again attend to show just how much they support the race staff. In the past teams have not only hosted the raffle, but giving away some very cool personal items in the raffle. We again expect to see race teams walk into the the volunteer dinner with arms full of race team swag.
Thank you for volunteering for a very wild week on the lake bed. The race can not happen with out the support the volunteers show for this exciting new form of off road racing.
Jeff

virgilwalker1 10-24-2009, 06:26 AM interested in volunteering again. had a blast last year at checkpoint 2.
EMT, and have radio.
GreyZuk 10-24-2009, 10:01 AM never been to KOH b4 but have wheeled JV several times... would there be any need for a LEO that could do security work?
JessD 10-25-2009, 12:53 PM Jake and I have talked to Dave about volunteering, and I am incredibly excited.
I was wondering what kind of medical support will be there? If theres help needed in that arena i'd love to do that as well as anywhere else that I'm needed.
BCzuk 10-25-2009, 01:23 PM Ill be there for the week helping pit but should be able to help with the lcq if you need more
Roxy I also have a BullHorn that you can use if needed. It has the siren etc, runs off of 8 D cells so its pretty loud. I should be on the lake bed on Tuesday

Jess, IIRC Bob and Machelle(?) Green will be heading up out medical support. However, we need anyone who know medical also.. since they can't be everywhere. Last year we had emt crews stationed at different areas, as well as the many of other people at checkpoints.

Sending a PM.
One of the biggest changes from last year to this year will be the security presence.
Had some stuff walk away from peoples trailers and a couple idiots that felt it was just fine to get too drunk to stand and do HIGH speed passes through camp at midnight with no headlights.:shaking:

Bo Neece 10-27-2009, 11:13 AM I'll be there as usual to help. Probably late Mon or Tues. Got radios. I'll bring something for the volunteer raffle.

thanks guys :)
Are you guys going to have a spot to sign up to volunter each day or the night before at the event?
I can help out also as a volunteer.
I can help with security if there is still a need, not a LEO, but been in the security industry the last 20 years in various capacities. So I'm sure I could bring something to the table.
Just let me know.
Might even be able to offer some Amsoil for the raffle.
Dirk
surveyboy 10-27-2009, 12:18 PM Are you guys going to have a spot to sign up to volunter each day or the night before at the event?
Gonna try and get as much of it squared away as possible before hand, but, I'll likely have a sign up/in sheet for every day
welndmn 10-27-2009, 12:47 PM Wow, lots of great volunteers so far, keep the list growing guys!

I'll be racing Friday, but if everything is square away with the buggy I would like to help out at LCQ...of course I won't know till the day or night before were we stand.
beerisgood 10-28-2009, 03:32 AM I'll be there and can help out and possibly bring a radio. I have experience almost getting run over by most of the east coast guys already seeing as I was a check point worker at the Rausch Creek quailifier. I mean almost getting run over has to count as experience, right?

PhillyFan55 10-28-2009, 08:11 PM Calling all crowd control volunteers. I have a job for you that will put you closer to the action than anyother position out there and you are garunteed to see all rigs running.
I have been in talks with EarlKann and the Rockbrawlers...but I need another 10 bodies. The mission is starting line crowd control. I need a group of focused individuals to monitor and keep back the crowd at the begining of the race.
What does this require? Be sober and able to tell people NO!!!
PM me if this sounds like something you would like to do. After the start I can have you shuttled out to another obstacle to help out there and get a different perspective from a rock climb.
Thanks...SurveyBoy!

You can hear my concern in the 2nd crusade DVD at the beginning of the race. The crowds absolutly freaked me out at the starting line. Amazing how close the spectators got to speeding almost out of control race cars. That wont happen again or I might start looking like a fish flopping on the ground at the starting line(read heart attack).
Thanks Sheriff Tree.:smokin: Hammertowns finest!

can we get a couple of the bean bag shot guns to help control the really slow learners
JeepRecoveryTeam 10-29-2009, 03:06 PM The last two posts just caused our insurance premiums to go up 10x :flipoff2:
Kurtuleas 10-29-2009, 03:13 PM You know, I was thinking about that.
Last year there was yellow caution tape if I remember right, but most of it was ruined in the wind.
It would be to much of a pain for concrete barricades...
But what about a bunch of red carbonite stakes like what the forest service has up here in Eldo? Just hammer a bunch of them down along the starting line so there is a definte line for people to stand behind...
I guess even wooden stakes would work...
Bo Neece 10-29-2009, 03:14 PM The last two posts just caused our insurance premiums to go up 10x :flipoff2:

Desperate times call for desperate measures. I would never want to see Jeff flopping around like a fish out of water.
We will have complete control of the starting line!
I am all for whatever kind of barricades we can put up...but nothing is better than a few volunteers to actually "police" the crowd. There are other steps being implemented as we speak. But we can't do it without the volunteers of the wheeling community.

Jeff Knoll 11-01-2009, 08:42 AM I met with the Extreme wheelers for Christ yesterday, they are the guys that do recovery and feed the volunteers all those great tacos. They may need a few more recovery crew teams to help this year due to the increase in mileage. I will know more soon, but if you like doing that kind of work let SurveyBoy know. That is a tough job, but rewarding for some. If you like problem solving and recovery its the best job in the race. Full course access, and you get to wheel with a group of guys that know the hammers better then most.
You need good solid recovery equipment and experience for that job.
Flatty 11-01-2009, 09:19 AM I was soooo itching to go this year, but I just found out when the league finals are for the wrestling team I coach. Sure as shit, the finals are up in the bay area on that Sat :( I would skip this, but we got a couple kids that will win league and probably make state.
Have fun

I definately have the experience to do this. I have the equipment and love that kind of thing. I have told Chris Cole that I would help with croud control at the start. After that I can do recoveries. SurveyBoy, Could you put me down if you need more recovery help? I will have my handheld 2M and mobile 2M in my rig. (both modified to handle the 150mhz range) I can be contacted any time during the race if needed.

I have currently volunteered to chase for a team running in the LCQ. If for some reason they're not able to get the rig ready in time, or in the unlikely event that they're not among the top contenders in the LCQ, I will certainly volunteer to help with the race.
I have a 2m radio as well.
surveyboy 11-02-2009, 10:46 AM sweet :)
PhillyFan55 11-02-2009, 04:28 PM Sheriff Big Tree checking in!
Just so everyone is aware...you don't need any mechanical skills, any rig or any radio to help me out at the beginning of the race.
There are two qualifications: 1) Be sober:flipoff2: 2) Be able to tell people to back up from the main drag at the starting line.
After the start everyone will have plenty of time to get to the obstacles and checkpoints well ahead of the field. So far the response has been great! Shaun and I will continue to work together to ensure that every aspect is well under control.
If you are interested in helping out at the start shoot me a pm or email as I have not been aboe to figure out this pm thing on here. My response time is normally pretty quick and I am generating a email list.
Thanks,
Chris Cole
RedBullJeep 11-02-2009, 04:37 PM Chris, it's nice for you to be doing this work in advance but man, I need to make sure you're not working too hard leading up to the event...how else will we win the WCMTC?

Jeff Knoll 11-02-2009, 08:08 PM I found a few "vintage" New Old stock CRCA Staff T-shirts. Large, and very Red. Those will go in the pot for the Volunteer raffle as well. How the heck I have a half dozen brand new 10 year old shirts is beyond me?
I'm gonna see what I can round up in Baja as far as team shirts as well.
Soundguy 11-02-2009, 09:08 PM I dropped Dave a PM but I'm down for helping with the PA again this year if you guys need it, feel free to PM me because I'll be there no matter what. :)

Of course. There are people with disabilities in the race!

warrencj6 11-07-2009, 10:47 PM I volunteered last year and had a great time (crowd control on Backdoor). I would like to volunteer again this year. I have a capable rig with a CB. I may have a 2m radio for the race.
Thanks,
Steven Warren
karstic 11-08-2009, 11:09 PM from san diego? i'm guessing 3-4 hours or so.
if you can fly to ontario airport you can typically be there in 2
or an hour if you can fly into palm springs...
karstic 11-08-2009, 11:26 PM Just got back from the lakebed a few hours ago and as I stared up at Fissure Mountain a tear came to my eye. You see, I spent 12 hours up on that mountain doing radio relay for Team NAXJA and Blue 52. Catching glimpses of the 52 car with 16x binos, scratchy reports from the car and pits, and screamed like a girl when Richard and Paul finally passed me at RM 74. I went out there in the dark and came back in the dark.
A tear of joy that I wouldn't have to do that shit all over again.
I gotta a Jeep and 2m rig and wouldn't mind helping out.
BIGJOEDUCKSLAYER 11-09-2009, 11:51 AM Hey Jeff, I dont know if you remember me, but I was at the very 1st koh before it was called koh. I had blue sammie buggy and delivered fuel to back side of course. It looks like I can make it this year. I have ham radio in truck and am a member of placer county search and rescue.

thanks for everyone volunteering.
we're gonna have a kick ass race because of you all.
PhillyFan55 11-23-2009, 09:58 AM Well, ya wanna be part of the race you say??
Thanks.

og_karnage 11-24-2009, 09:47 PM I'm in if you could still abuse me. Crowd control / check points for sure. Hoping my truck is ready, but will have atleast a quad to get me around.
93xjcowboy 11-26-2009, 10:07 PM I would love to help out and get some experience with the race. I Absolutely need to leave saturday night or sunday morning (early) after the race though as I need to be back in PA to ship out for Basic training. I already am working out the plan for driving out and arriving on either sunday or monday before the race. I will have my tow rig but not my jeep (being built) but I should be able to get anywhere thats not in a canyon with the truck (diesel 4x4 on 35" MTRs). You can use me for road crossing/rig recovery(desert)/ transportation of anything (people, gear....)/or whatever else you see fit.
If you have any questions for me send me a PM and I will try and get back to you.
On a side note anyone that wants to hitch a ride with me to the Hammers is more than welcome.

toy4x4ota 12-13-2009, 09:25 AM jsut saw that i am stationed at checkpoint 2. i will keep checking back to make sure that nothing has changed. How do we know where each checkpoint is going to be? Is everyone supposed to meet up down there and get an idea of where we are supposed to go? hopefully i will have a cb in the truck by then, but cannot promise anythiing.

Note that you (or someone at your checkpoint) need a 2-meter radio that can operate on 151.475, which is not a CB.

We might benifit from a couple pit captians as well, if you can find someone to fit the bill.
4 pits
duties; Make sure people are following the fuel storage and pit mat rules, fire extinguishers, and help get everyone set up in an orderly fashion. Make sure jackholes don't leave their trash, yada yada.
Last year BLM inspected the main pits during the race, I bet they will again this year.

I'm working with Dave to get a set of 2m radios that all you need is a 12v cig lighter power source and a flat piece of metal for the antanna to stick to. we'll give them a radio to use and the have you return it at the end.

I've emailed some of you reguarding your checkpoints. I can't give many details about where they are at this point, because it'd give away the course.
