: Redline MTL gearbox lube

I searched the Pirate on this before I posted with no luck, so...

Who's used Redline MTL in their R-380's and how many miles have you had it in there ? How's it working for you ?

The Redline site says "MTL also satisfies...the viscosity requirements for ATFs." It doesn't go as far as suggesting it's a replacement for those boxes that spec ATF.

Comments ?

Hey Keith,

Land Rover Issued the Service Bulletin (TSB) on November 11, 1998. It read that it effected ALL R380 Manual Transmissions.

Range Rover from: WA384300
Discovery from: WA752315
Defender from: WA131138

Where these are the last right digits of the VIN. I can’t seem to confirm whether the bulletin was released in the US or not, but may not have been, as LRNA stopped importing manual transmission vehicles in 1997. Any how, the Bulletin specified to change the Lubricant from ATF to a Product produced by Caltex of Australia, but Marketed under the Texaco name. “TEXACO MTF94”. I have not tried to find it in the US, and it may or may not be available here. However, RedLine's MTL (Manual Transmission Lubricant) has virtually identical specifications, and is probably the best lubricant you could pour into your R380. Both the MTF94 and MTL are Rated as GL-4, 70W80 Gear Oils. I've been running it in My Discovery R-380, but only for about 4,000 miles with no issues, and will be changing the D-90 over to it to soon (D-90 currently running RedLine's D4 ATF). Hope this is of some help to you….

hey Scott - thanks !

I did some searching around and found a copy of the LR text on the Norsk Land-Rover Klubb web page, here:

http://www.nlrk.no/web-01/bul001.htm

Also, some South African blokes were talking about that Caltex stuff originally being formulated for Hyundai and being resold in ZA land as MTF-GL4.

Here's the Caltex data sheet:

http://www.caltex.com.au/products_oil_detail.asp?id=107

As Scott said, with the blessing of MTF94 by the tech bulletin, MTL seems to be the ticket for R380's !

Hello Alia,

I'm sorry, do I know you? At any rate, no, I'm not going to make it to the MAR this year, I'm unfortunatly on call this weekend, and won't be able to make it. Even If I were going though, only two seats in the D-90 (Especially when packed up with gear for a trip), and my wife is always my lovely co-pilot...

No worries Scott and no, you don't know me. I just happen to be in Glen Burnie, MD working on a project and wanted to ride/follow someone to MAR.

Later.

Alia,

A couple of us will be leaving early afternoon on Friday from Arlington if you want to follow us. Unfortunately there's no extra room in the trucks, but we can at least guide you down there.
