Hey snowscout... youll soon find that the locals up here want to keep the highlakes local... I have been bitched at enough to not even go there anymore:( Everyone is worried about it being shut down and its in danger of being done soon. Not only that but there are armed rangers up there giving tickets for everything.. DUI's , Drunk in public's ect.. so I would steer clear of having big groups up. Just take one buddy with you and go for it!

I have said the same thing about Barret Lake for a long time! Some people just feel the need to publically invite everyone to a trailrun......this is what will get our trails closed. In my opinion just e-mail or call some friends instead of announcing the trip:rolleyes:

Saddle is an interesting trip! How is Morris these days? I heard that the fishing was pretty killer up there if you can get a raft in...You going to do any fishing this weekend up there?

My family has been going up there for over 50 years, so the locals with a problem can fawk off :flipoff:

Probably the same locals that don't haul their trash out...or break the fishing limits yet don't eat everything they catch.

People, if your drinking and driving you deserve the ticket, thats the law! Secondly I pick up my trash along with my fellow wheelers (Sno-Blind 4x4) Places dont get closed by treading lightly, they get closed from :rainbow: ppls dumping their trash, going off the main trail and generally dis respecting the area. I pack in pack out every time as do the people in my group:) . I invite people to go up there so that there will be other people to go with. I dont think people should have to be reminded to pick up their trash or drink and drive, thats just common sense. I almost always pack out other peoples trash from where ever I wheel. High lakes isnt being shut down from people wheeling up there. Its from their dis respect to the area. I dont want to wheel in chico like at mudd creek and wind up with a $2500 ticket, so I go else where. I respect High Lakes for the beauty of the land and the fun trials it has. :D

long lake is beautiful 1rusty, I dont have my fishing license although I know there were allot of mini catfish last time I went. The Locals dont own the land but. I dont blame them for wanting people out. the wheeling club i am in, (Sno-Blind) is always happy to have a new person come out with them, We pick up our trash and 99% of the time we pick up other peoples junk but we arent jaded by it. We all realize that the finger cant be pointed blindly because that will not help the situation but by informing people makes them realize their actions and the effect it makes for the rest of us.

hey mike the only reason they dont want you up there is cuz they are envy yr truck, you know as well as I and everyone else that no-one owns those lakes, last time I was there I saw a :rainbow: soccer MOM mini van going up. If I was The Localas Up there Id be more worried about keeping them out instead of us.

I think you missed the point... I have taken 2 out of town groups up there whose names I dont need to mention...It was a spring run and a meadow go tore up when we were up there by a Local!!! :flipoff: I taped off the meadow with caution tape and when I got home from the weekend I had mutiple phone calls about bringing up out of towners and tearing shit up! AAAHH!!

I was so pissed... The rigs looked extreme and beaten so they are there for destroying stuff...

I was up there in my Sami this spring and was accused of another meadow destruction personaly so I stay out with the buggie's and just roll in my Full size...
Its the buggies that get me into trouble...Because I have the rep in Chico for who I am and what I do I am a Target... I hate it. I feel like a fukin' skater...

I like going in through Butte meadows...I feel it is a lot faster and a better drive than going up via paradise & inskip...no stop lites and a smooth drive...53mi from the house to the staging area.
Morris lake was cool 3 weeks back, I was the only one there, did not drive down since I did not see a trail there. I stopped at the top where it looks like everyone turns around, but then later someone said that rock trail going down was the road...sure dont look like it..more like a rocky loose wash there..
I did not see one ranger...several camped out at long & campbell lakes, few hunters and lots more at spring lake, several horse riders, but hardly anyone running trails....I felt alone...LOL
Pic is the spot I turned around on since the trail went bye bye

There used to be a back way in thru the Feather River Canyon...Out of Belden. I think that it dumped you in at Saddle lake. There was a locked gate there that was/is operated by PG&E. My dad tried it like 15 years ago but the trail was washed out....Anyone ever try that way in?

You can still get to HWY 70 from the high lakes. It helps to have a USGS topo map, but the trail that goes by long and continues by what I believe is grassy will eventually dump you out in Pulga. There is an awesome waterfall near the end that is worth a stop. As of last summer the road was no longer maintained after the most recent fire. We came a cross a washed out culvert that resulted in a roll over for one of the rigs in the group. You can also cut through to the Belden area by taking a different turn along the way.

-Jess, you're not going to the comp?

I was just up there last weekend at Campbell/Morris/Saddle and Long . The biggest problem right now is the hunters that have brought in their city rigs and moved all the rocks out of the way. Someone even went so far as to cut a bunch of manzanita and move all the logs near Spring Valley to make a road around the little pile of rocks. Hell if they would have turned left instead of right they could have used the 2wd bypass road that goes down by the dam.
Yea, I'm a local and I like to protect the High Lakes but I also get a kick out of watching someone go in there that's never been before. It's the same as everywhere else, it only takes one or two bad apples to spoil the bunch.
I'm worried that the high lakes will be closed especially if the meadows keep getting tore up. I believe the damage is being done by just a few stupid kids that just have no sense of responsibility or just don't realize what damage they are causing. When I drove my toy up and down staircase this weekend in 2wd only to find a new stock extended cab silverado parked in the recently chainsaw cut bushes near the cut off to campbell lake I new who moved most of the rocks. Luckily Jack Johnson the USFS ranger for the area was behind me on his quad. I didn't stick around but I'm sure that guy got a ticket.
Enough rant now I'll be up there maybe on Saturday if Someone local wants to road trip in with me. Oh yea the Pair-o-dice 4 wheelers and the USFS are going to be having a trail maintenance and Dam repair day at Saddle lake in early October. I'll post the dates here later this week. We could use all the help we can get. There was talk of cementing in a winch post at the top of the little hill at Saddle as well.

I've talked with you about your club's activities in the high lakes area, please let me know when the dates are for the Saddle Lake projects. The winch post sounds like a great idea, as long as someone has a winch. I'm assuming the boulder movers must.

Huh, I was just thinking that I haven't seen him in a while. I've got my new dump truck mud flaps on now. They completely cover the fullwidth axle and 37 MTR's. Hopefully they'll overlook the absence of anything resembling a fender.

I agree that the High Lakes should be kept somewhat of a secret. But since there has already been write-ups in National 4 Wheel Drive Magazines about the High Lakes, I think the word is already out.

Too be honest, most of the issues I've had up there where from "locals" that drive up for the day, get shit faced, blare Smash Mouth so that everyone within a 5 mile radius could hear it, and then leave tons of trash and camp fires still burning.

Last time I saw the Morris Trail it was pretty torn up and you needed some big ass tires to get over the ruts.

Hey Jerry -

Haven't seen you outside of the Jeep section in a while...

I agree with Blucruz - I think that we can't generalize who is tearing up the trails, either locals or folks from out of town. It's just a few bad apples ruining the trails for everybody, no matter where they're from.

And yes, I every time I hear "All-Star" by Smashmouth I have to change the channel on the radio. Those drunk summ-biatches must have played it over & over for three hours straight.

Let's see, I think we've been wheeling up there since about '88 or so. Just about every time we go there's usually always some yahoo up there doing stuff he shouldn't be.

It would be nice if the trail could be maintained in such a way that stockers could only make it so far, and leave the harder stuff, well... hard. Lots of fun little trails (except the one going to the Meth lab in the shack)
