I'm going to be stuck in California for the next two years, and wondering if anyone can give me a run down of how good the hunting is, how strict the laws are, that kinda thing. I like turkey and coyote hunting, and usually take both with a shotgun. I'm used to hunting in tight eastern woods, so suggestions for camo, equipment, and calls would be good. Also how hard and expensive is it to get an out of state big game permit? Thanks guys

All the turkeys you could want to shoot are right in Sacramento......:laughing:

Where you will be living at depends on whats going to be around you to hunt.
Military = resident license.
Where are you going to be stationed?

I'll be in Miramar. I'd like to try and get my Grand Slam Turkey hunts done in the next few years. I've gotten an Eastern, and while I'm stationed here I want to try and get a Rio Grande, Merriam's, and a Gould's. Those are all western birds, so I'd like to travel around and get them while I'm out west.

The closest place for you will be Mount Laguna which is an hour or two east of miramar. It's been 10-15 years for me, but they were just introducing turkeys at that time. Coyotes are everywhere in CA so that shouldn't be a problem. Just look for the national forest land and BLM and you'll be good.

Cleavland NF is close by as well as the national parks and quite a bit of blm land around there.
My son is stationed in Okinawa also.

Don't some of the military bases offer hunting opportunities?

They do.

Ft Huachuca has some great AZ deer hunting. Yuma may have some coyoyte hunting.

National FOREST, not national parks. The rangers at Yosemite tend to frown upon shooting bambi in front of the tourists.

A fact I frequently have to drill into the heads of hikers in the trinity alps when they cry about people "illegally" hunting up there :shaking:
