Has anyone used this power steering kit? Just trying to decide if it is worth the expense. I can get it for jobber price, which is still $550. Anyone who has had experience with this setup I would appreciate the advice. Thanks in advance. By the way, my pump and box are off of a full size cherokee (77 if that makes a diff).

$550 seems like a lot for a steering shaft and u-joints necessary for a PS conversion. Personally, I like Borgeson (http://www.borgeson.com) steering parts for their quality and know that one can get a double-D shaft and the two u-joints necessary for the conversion for less than $550.

To illustrate the mark-up on these Land Cruiser PS conversions, the firewall bearing that is included in these "kits" for late-model Cruisers ranges in price from $40 to more than $60. You can buy the identical bearing for $15 and with 20 minutes on a milling machine or even a drill press modify the SAE bolt pattern to fit the Land Cruisetr firewall.

Flaming River and Borgeson both make quality parts, and for steering, I think quality is essential. I do think that you can get better prices by buying the individual components from either Flaming River or Borgeson directly. Try to avoid the aftermarket kits, and NEVER pay $60 for a $15 bearing.

The flaming river shaft isn't $550. That is the price of the whole AA kit. I just bought a flaming river shaft and it was $220. Here is a pic of their truck slip shaft, 2" of travel. This kit includes a 41" shaft that can be cut to length. I priced the joints and shaft separately and it was more.

For you guys using the Flaming River or Borgeson double d shaft, how did you attach it to the stock FJ40 steering column shaft? I had a key way machined into mine and was going to use a ujoint yoke from Napa. I got the parts list from this board, but I am still having issues on how to join this generic u-joint yoke to the double d shaft from the previously mentioned companies. Just curious.

I am running the flaming river u-joints and I love them ($65per).. Very high quality. Unless you specifically want a chrome or stainless shaft just use one out of a junkyard.. Piece of cake and very cheap.
On the LC steering shaft I just made it a DD. Then the FR DD/DD stering joint fit perfectly..

For the upper u-joint get one with female double-D fittings on each end. One will slip over the double-D telescoping shaft and be held in place with set screws. Remove the Land Cruiser shaft and have the end of it machined to a double-D. Just like Mace said while I was busy typing this reply:D

I machined the end of my LC column into a double D with a grinder as mace and medusa said

I'm going to have the shaft machined to DD same as the others, I have to go to the shop anyway to get the pitman arm reamed to accept the scout size TRE I am using.
