I had my 91 Wrangler 4.0 idling to test for an overheating issue and it died after idling for about 10 minutes. I haven't gotten it started since. The fuel pump primes and I smell fuel. I pulled the line on the exit side of the fuel filter and got fuel so I don't think it is clogged. I don't have a FP guage that I can screw on to the schrader valve at the fuel rail but I did use a small screw driver and nothing came out. It has a new cap/rotor and good plugs/wires. I grounded the coil wire while my son cranked the Jeep and I got spark. I check the distributor and the gear is in tact. When I pulled a plug to see if it was getting a spark I smelled gas coming out of the cylinder so it is getting fuel but I had no spark at the plug. I am stumped at this point but hate to buy an ECU and it still not work. Anyone have any guidance?

Might be crankshaft position sensor. It cranks but doesn't fire/turn over?

Right, it will crank but not fire. I thought about CPS but based on what I have searched my symptoms don't match a bad CPS.

Right... with most bad crankshaft position sensors they don't crank at all, right? I'm having similar issues with my Jeep, cranks strong but no spark. It's odd that there is spark at the coil but not at the plug. Sorry I can't be of more help :( Be sure to report back your findings.

Got a new ECU and no change other than the fire from the TB because I poured about a gallon of gas down it. I guess I'll try CPS and then start parting it out. If anyone in Texas needs axles, wheels, tires, engine, seats, tops, etc...let me know. I think I am done with this pile of crap.

If you have spark at the coil but not at the plugs then you need to isolate where the problem is between the coil and the plugs. A bad coil wire would cause the symptoms you describe. Follow the electrical path. This might be a simple one.

I haven't had time to really spend on it so I'll take a breath and look at it again in a few weeks. I assume the coil wire it fine because I left it on the coil and grounded it against the block to get spark. Since I got fire from the throttle body I am now confused, I figured no spark to the plugs but then how did the gas catch fire? I have fuel and spark but it doesn't run, makes no sense. I'll buy a CPS as a last ditch effort and then start saving my money to go V8 then sell it. I don't think the neighborhood association would appreciate me parting the thing out in my driveway.

I replaced CPS and adjusted the distributor back to the right spot and it came as close to starting as it has but still no fire. I am going to replace the pump tomorrow to see if maybe it primes but doesn't have enough to pressurize the injectors. Can I leave the factory pump in the tank and place an inline pump to pull fuel? I get fuel out of the line after the filter so there doesn't seem to be a clog, just seems easier to throw an inline pump on and avoid taking the tank out.

+1 could just be loose or bad wire, depending how you tested it.
how did you see there was no spark at the plug? you need to stick screwdriver in the plug wire and get it close to ground to check for spark (unless you have the correct tools) dont do it with plug in the boot. cuz its hard to ground the spark plug enough to see it ionize the gap.
doesent matter what kind of inline pump or whatever you want to dick around with if ya aint go no spark...

I have no fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail and that is why I am going the fuel route. I had residual gas in the engine from pouring fuel down the TB and it was enough for the engine to run for a few seconds before it stopped. The idle didn't change with application of the throttle so I figure I have spark but no fuel.
