: Back to the rubicon pooper debate
BigBadBob 09-24-2002, 01:12 PM I read an article yesterday that was on the front page of the santa cruz sentinel yesterday. Here's a link to it:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2002/09/22/state1428EDT7705.DTL
I think it shows one potential solution to the problem of all the shit on the rubicon. Of all the things they do, I think the best idea there is giving the public a place to dump their turds. Once you poop in the bag, where do you put it?
Monkeyboy 09-24-2002, 01:27 PM POOP targets hahaha
I can see all us talking about the grouping on our targets from 25 yrds.
I say just let us have someplace off the trail to dump our dumps.
I have no problem wallking around with those little doogy do bags in my pocket to pick up after myself. Hell I pick up my dogs crap without a problem.
Tie the little doggy bag up drop it in my 5 gallon poop transporting bucket with lid. then dump it whereever I am supposed to once I get off the trail.
cbassett 09-24-2002, 01:36 PM Thinking an 11x17 sheet of paper wouldn't work too well after a night of beer n chili, followed by the first big cup 'o coffee!
Just crap in a bag, or crap on loose dirt then scoop it into a bag.
Toss it in with the rest of your trash.
samurizer99 09-24-2002, 03:06 PM after a couple nights of drinkin and eating the stuff i eat on the trail i would dump a pile that would run off the sides of a SHEET OF PAPER:rolleyes:
moveaside 09-24-2002, 03:09 PM Don't forget latex exam gloves 'cause drunk and tired hands aren't very steady
Could help against any mishaps
I say PITA but until something better comes along give it awhirl
Magoo 09-24-2002, 04:16 PM The campus library is not the place to read this post LOL!
When I was in the Army, we used to use someone's Helmet lined with a couple of plastic sacks to unload while in transit (113 based vehicle). Officers helmets worked the best but were hard to come by :D That would prevent the "run off" LOL
Bill4rest 09-24-2002, 04:30 PM http://www.rx7club.com/forum/images/smilies/puke.gif
I figure most people will have a base camp right? So you really only have to deal with it as you leave. I for one don't see the big deal.
Roc Dog 09-24-2002, 04:39 PM Yea, something has to be done. The TP all over the trail is gettting out of control. Every little spot just off the trail in all areas seem to have poop and TP. Not to mention a ton of trash.
My father who flew in from Chicago this last weekend to do the trail with me for his first time was so amazed of the beauty of the area but was just as much sickened by the disregard of the idiots who leave their trash and dont respect the area.
Something needs to be done to increase every individuals part in respecting and maintaining the trail.
I think there should be signs posted with Rubicon Rules and they should be enforced with fines. Signs may look a little ugly out there on the trail but they would look much better than a bunch of trash and poop!
Bill4rest 09-24-2002, 05:34 PM Yip the wife was pretty grosed out our 1st trip out. Now she might not go again:(
Dirty Harry 09-24-2002, 05:41 PM This better than the system that we have now (nothing). Personally, I use Imodium AD before I go up to the 'Con and then don't worry about it until I get home, but I know that this solution is not for everyone. ;)
Props to you BigBadBob for bring up the topic again and considering another option! :usa:
FULLSIZE 09-24-2002, 06:40 PM 5 gallon bucket

BURY IT!.....most of this talk started because of the visible TP on the trail. The responsible crapper buries his/her shit. Yes I know of the argument that with the amount of crap up there vs. the amount of soil. But my rebuttle to that is complete burial has never been done. So we are not 100% sure. Another thing I noticed around Spider is the the 'ol jerk and toss the ladies (possibly some men too) do with the tampons. Burn them, bury them or pack them out.
add edit: Also, we can bitch and moan on this bulletin board about what can and should be done. But we need to realize that it needs to go further than this board. I think it would be safe to say that 90% of the people using the Rubicon Trail annually have never heard of Pirate4x4.com. Education is needed outside the computer.
MoonDog 09-24-2002, 09:25 PM I like the idea of rubber or latex gloves along with the crapsack, and packing it with you. That way if you come across any greenies or other inconsiderate wheelers trashing the trails, you can do like monkeys do and throw your own shit at 'em. (who says we need to be civilized???)
Tate - wishing he had not read or contributed to this discission while eating dinner.

wow, that was deep. what the hell do you think we do out there, just shit on rocks? i hear lots of people talkin about this stuff around camp fires and beer coolers. the only thing that will get everyone to follow the same rules/ideas is to put up a sign with suggestions. even if you do that, the dumb ones that dont know to bury their own crap wont read the sign anyways. so what do we do then??
kodak 09-24-2002, 09:29 PM There is no soil to dig a hole. around Spider lake it is really bad.
TP and crap everywere this weekend by the falling down out house.
a sign that states "Pack out your shit."
a box for bags at loon and McKenney

The added stuff wasn't meant just for the crap problem. It was meant as a general statement about anything we discuss here. I just see a lot of good ideas on the board and question if they ever get out to the other non-board users. A lot of bitching goes on amongst us when a lot of the time we are not even the problem but the ones who recognize the problem. But to answer your question, yes I have seen where people have just shit on rocks. :D

I think the box for bags might get a tad expensive. Shasta has an advantage over us in that they charge to use the facilities.
A sign at the popular entrances (as well as one up around spider, perhaps as you're coming up to sluice) reminding people to pack out their poop would be worthwhile. But most of all I think simply providing a place to put your bags full of poop would help the most. I'm much more willing to bring my poop out (and the non-native toilet-paper flower) if I have somewhere to dump it.
So where are the head-honchos of the save the rubicon initiative? What do we need to do to implement something like this on the con and eventually at other popular spots in California and across the country? What is feasible?

Sadly I have seen where people have shit and wiped within 5yds of the lake (under that big plaque on the rocks at spider, at lake level)

But it's your poop:confused: Just take in a big pale with the snap-able lid type and take it out with ya........... When you hit your 1st gas stop Dump IT!!!
TexasBlake 09-24-2002, 11:29 PM Whats wrong with digging a hole for it. Thats what I always did when I backpacked, and even the tree huggers said ti was fine....

That's what I always do when I'm on trail and don't see civilization for a few days.
A 5$ portable shitter that way and the problem is solved.
Another problem is to get people acting responsible enough to do so. :flipoff2:
I personally have more of a problem with the Shasta method in that they are wasting 2 paper bags and 2 plastic bags with every deposit? Sure, it removes hman waste from the trail, but look at all the non-biodegradable materials their alternative is wasting :shaking:
If you are gonna come up with a solution to keep waste off the trail, it should not include adding MORE waste to the dump :(
Arrow 09-25-2002, 07:03 AM Anyone try a 5 gallon bucket with some scoopable cat litter in it ???
Drop your load and give the bucket a shake !!
Seems like if it'll work for stanky cat poo why wouldn't it work for us?
Dychen 09-25-2002, 10:19 AM cause if fluffy had my diet and drank half as much as most people do on the trail, it would fall over dead :D
Roc Dog 09-25-2002, 05:10 PM I like the cat litter in the bucket and give it a shake. Just line the bucket with plastic, use that bucket and litter for the whole trip and take the bag out and dump it. Good idea.
The only problem with that is only a few people will actually go out of their way to set a system up like that and use it. I still think we need signs posted at all entences and all major camping areas saying something like
"You shit on the Con, we use your face to wipe it up! You pak it in you pak it out including your shit!"
Or something to get the point across. People are going to take signs more seriously. It's not going to stop all the idiots that cant read out there but it will limit the poop and trash we have to pick up each year...
