When you have dual transfer cases, the 3rd stick controls the front case lo/hi range

On a NP205 one stick is for the front axle: Low, Neutral, Hi. The other stick is for the rear axle: Low, Neutral, Hi. The third stick is for the crawl box.

It engages your low gear set.
This would be the arraignment in a Atlas with an underdrive.
This enables you to have 3 low range options - say, 2.7, 3.8 & 10.x - depending on what arraignment of gearing you have selected.

stick one = front axle
drive, neutral, low

stick two = rear axle
drive, neutral, low

Stick three
low
