Can you lubricate the ctm's installed or do you have to break them down to perform the u-joint lubrication??? I read that they require lots of TLC to keep them lubed and was just wondering. Boring day and I was trying to decide on running alloy's and ctm's in my 44 or look for a 60 and go to the trouble of the swap....

Boring day..

The caps have Zerk fittings in them. Other than have to Greese 4 different fittings it's no big deal. www.ctmracing.com
You can see the Zerks in the caps in this picture.

Only takes a couple of minutes - it's easiest to jack up the front and and spin the wheel to lube each zerk. Takes about 10 minutes to do both ujoints.

The earliest prototype versions, had plastic covers that needed to be removed carefully with a sharp object, lubed with a needle tip, then snapped back on. They were kind of a pain in the butt because the caps would break easily if you werent carefull. You may have heard of the maintenance difficulties, from someone who had experience with the old style caps.
The new fittings as has been mentioned is as simple as rotating the wheel and greasing the ends.

The rest of us that don't run drive flanges just spin the axle to greese them :)

You might wanna consider keeping a set as spares, for the Warn hubs. The CTM's and Warn shafts have been known to have their way with the Warn hubs. :D

For some reason I was having a very hard time getting grease in w/ the needle. I just screw in a regular zerk (metric) to get the grease in, then put the needle one back in.

I too am having problems with this. 3 out of 8 caps don't want to take greese. I've just been too busy to take them down and mess with them.

Don't expect sucess with one of those small cartridge guns.
You need to settle yourself and firmly plant the needle straight in the zerk and still be able to put some muscle on the gun's handle.
Those caps is crying for attention!

Thats what I did. However, I did run out of greese on my drive lines (about six fittings latter). Maybe I'll have more success with a full greese gun.

Yep. those that look like a hypo are not right. I pretty well don't even bother with the regular zerk head. That style tip works just fine on most Zerks.
Well I look forward to blowing hubs and not shafts. I just ordered a set of CTM's monday. Warn shaft have been laying on my work bench for a couple months waiting. I'll tell you what, Jack is a super great guy to deal with. After talking to him for a while and hearing just what it takes to make those joints what he charges seems like it's not enough. He blows though $80 cutters regularly as in once or twice a day and it's not as though he's making 30 with that one cutter it's more like he's making 6-8 when the cutter finnaly gets dull. Maybe one day I can afford one of those axles he makes.

I got a grease gun fitting at Pep Boys for about $4. You have to get them pretty much straight on the zerk, but they work. I just lay the gun on the floor and push down on the handle when I get the tip lined up right.
