: Another dual.............

tranny setup.:D

OK we're all desperate for new tech and I thought I might be able to give us all a little something to think about in bed tonight. A friend of mine has come up with another dual tranny setup. Instead of using a Volvo tranny, he decided to use one from an LJ80. The bellhousing and tailshaft have been removed, taking the reverse gear with it. I don't know alot of the small details of how it was done, but it seems that the input splines on the LJ trans are the same as the output splines of the sammy tranny. Easy enough to put those together. Of course alignment is critical and that is what allowed me to snap two pics of the setup. It was taken out for adjustments. :D

The tranny is mounted a few inches backwards, and the t-case a few inches forwards, when it's all bolted together. I think it is an 87 Samurai trans, 80ish LJ trans, and an 84 t-case being used here. It is slow.:D

I will leave you all with this to ponder.:D

Yup it's a guy from Vic. He's had it together and ran it, but it was vibrating so it's being repaired now.:D

I never even heard of the lj80 being imported to the states, so just how available is this tranny up there? now if we could do somthing simular with a more available tranny...that would be trick!!

Not very, at least not out east. I've got a couple in the feild behind the barn but they are very sad looking.

I think this setup is asking for problems. You want your downstream components to be larger than those upstream - torque multiplication and all that. I think the LJ80 t-case is marginal too. This things are tiny sized.

And the availability...at least the Volvo tranny or Toy t-case is somewhat available.

Just my spin, $0.02, etc.

Well I'm a couple of years late replying to this thread :D

I'm in the process of doing a similar project, but with the stock 410 trans and t-case, and adding the LJ80 trans. As far as strength, the two trans are identicle, other than the ratios and how the shifter attaches. With the bellhousing removed, and the reverse gear part of the trans removed, shaft to shaft lenght can be as short as 10"!

I'm just starting this project, and stumbled across this post...Jones, any updates on how this setup is holding up? Has anyone else tried something similar? Any more ideas how to mate the shafts? I was thiking of simply cutting the splined driveshaft end off, becasue the output and input shaft have the same splines. I'm not sure about the 2nd trans to t-case part tho.

Thanks

You've got the right idea for joining the transmissions. I can't remember how the 2nd trans is attached to the t-case. I know it was some part that was turned down in a lathe and that's about it. :D

It looks like I can turn down the slip yoke till the u-joint stuff is gone, then weld a flange to that, could that be what he did?

And uzi, I've been following that thread, thanks. I chose to go dual trans becasue of the 1:1 4th gear. I'm all out of RPM if I put any more reduction in high gear. With my stock 410 trans , the LJ trans, stock 410 t-case, and 4:56 gears, I'll be around 140:1 in 1st/1st/low.

The reason it took so long was because they had to be declassified for all to see.
