Looking at getting this, seems like a good deal..

http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/tls/1440636313.html

variable speed, nice vise, power feed on the long travel

no tooling, no DRO... but still, $1000 asking price? good deal?

Dude, you are near OHIO... which is one of the used tooling goldmines...

Keep an eye out on http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/

It seems that you can't fall over for good tooling deals. There's one guy on there, user Craig Donges who does some dealer selling he generally has decent prices and would be fairly local to you. He had a nice Bridgeport a while back too.

So, does that mean this is a good deal or not?

Thats a pretty good deal if the ways are good (check for a nice swirly pattern on the ways....means they've been taken care of) and the spindle is good. You might want to bring along a dial indicator and make sure there isn't any noticable run-out when you turn the spindle...no more than 0.001" when you indicate off the inside of the spindle bore. If it is 3 phase, you'll need to account for a rotary phase converter (~$500). Tooling will set you back at least another $1000 to make that machine worth while.

So fawker ...did you get it?

Adds been deleted so somebody got it.

Sorry I didn't get back to you... my buddy at work wants $1700 for his mill .. basically same mill as that with DRO.

Craig is a stand up guy. GREAT to deal with and has good shipping rates even on freight items.

Used to be. Six to ten years ago, I'd see incredible deals at auctions. Now, everything is ragged out CNC stuff with no handwheels and antique controls.

The last auction I went to, a beat-up Bridgeport that had the head inverted and clamped down went for $2500. You couldn't move the table, couldn't turn the spindle, no way to know what condition it was in and it STILL brought $2500

Prior to that, I saw a less than two-year old Enco go for $1050, my max budget was $1000!

Occasionally, horizontals are available for less than their scrap value.

I haven't seen a really good deal in years. I now have a good friend who works with one of the local auction companies, but even he's only finding automated stuff and by the time he gets paid, they're too expensive for me.

I'd rather buy a new H-F mill/drill than an unknown condition used Bridgeport. At least with H-F you'd get a 30 day warranty.

you apparently have lost your mind...

Because I won't spend $2500 for a piece of machinery that one cannot even begin to suitably inspect?

At least with an H-F mill/drill, I'd be making chips with some back-up. If I spent $2500 for an uninspected Bridgeport I could easily end up with a huge expensive pile of shit.

I want a milling machine, not a project.

Sell it to me and then you can buy a Bridgeport!

Which H-F do you have? A mill/drill or knee mill?

I've run an Enco mill/drill. It was better than a hacksaw and file:flipoff2:

You're not looking hard enough...
I brought this one home for $150.
I put another $550 into it for the missing handles/and stuff.
Even if I put another $1K into it to get it running, I'll still be happy with the purchase.

Table alone was worth $150. Also included functional power-feed.

That looks the same as mine, which is a Taiwanese knock-off made by a company called Lilian. Variable speed head... hell wonder if they would let you use the 20% off on it, only $3600.

Looks just like the Enco model I used. If you're patient, you'd be surprised how well they work. Sadly, the guy who has the one I used thinks it's gold plated! It is rusting away in his basement and hasn't been used in ten years, the last time I used it!

Trust me, I look plenty hard. I'm either finding junk or horribly overpriced stuff. I thought I'd found one on Craigslist but I don't think it ever existed in the real world.

Cash flow my friend, cash flow. It seems that when I have the cash, machines aren't available, and vice versa. Some of the nicest machines that sold the cheapest were sold a month before I rented shop space to put them.

Radial drill or standard pedestal drill press?

If it's a radial drill, I'm interested.

Timing is everything. Many local shops with prime equipment are closing locally. Big shops. Good stuff.

Stop yer bitchen...if you lived in Colorado you would pay much more. :flipoff2:

What I love about the tawineese machines are the tags. It is printed in English, but the misspelled words and terms used are like pre-internet LOL reads.

Probably have the cash mid-next month. I'm inthe midst of a resto and when i's finished, it's diesel conversion time! Along the way, we have some rust repair to do as well. Yep, maybe next month.

I've got a good place to put it and a car trailer to move it with, but would have to find a truck to pull it with.

Schram...i can fill my place with J heads if i wanted too...they are out there no problem. They are still going to auction every week around here but how many do you need really in a shop? I have two that we use as glorified drill presses because we have normal cnc machines...so they sit.
