BLM hosts wilderness open house June 18
LAS VEGAS ? The Bureau of Land Management hosts a
wilderness open house
June 18 at the West Sahara Library from 4 to 7 p.m.
The library is located
at 9600 West Sahara, Las Vegas NV 89117, on the
northwest corner of Sahara
and Ft. Apache, just west of Sahara.
The goal of the open house is to inform the
public about:
1. Interim Management of Wilderness Study Areas
2. New wilderness regulations which govern the
management of designated
wilderness areas
3. How wilderness management may affect other resource
management programs
The BLM's Las Vegas Field Office currently has
jurisdiction over 21
Wilderness Study Areas, or WSAs. Within those 21 WSAs,
there are
potentially 576,905 acres of wilderness. Of those
acres, 185,956 acres are
being recommended for wilderness designation. No
wilderness areas have yet
been designated within the Las Vegas Field Office
jurisdiction.
The open house format allows the public to visit
with subject matter
experts and receive information at tables specifically
identified by the
following major subject areas:1. Law Enforcement2.
Livestock Grazing
3. Mining/Minerals4. Wild Horses and Burros5.
Wilderness
6. Recreation, Off-Highway Vehicles7. Wildlife and
Hunting8. Rock Climbing
A separate table is provided with information
regarding the recently
designated Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon -
Emigrant Trails National
Conservation Area in northwestern Nevada. This table
is staffed by the
BLM's Winnemucca Field Office.
Information packets are available at the door
along with maps for the
public. The public is encouraged to attend. "We want
to hear from all
concerned parties pertaining to the wilderness issue
in Southern Nevada,"
said Mark Morse, BLM's Las Vegas Field Manager. "Our
goal is to be
inclusive. It's always better to hear from everyone
early in the process
versus later. We want as many partners in the
development of this issue as
early as possible."
Those interested should contact BLM Wilderness
Specialist, Donn
Siebert at 647- 5056, or Phil Guerrero, BLM Public
Affairs Officer at647-5046.
