Even with the stock shifter sitting 6" higher than you're used to in your 4Runner, it's pretty comfy...you may still need to bend for clearance around dash/t-case shifters.

Well Roxy and I spent most of the day working today. She completly cleaned the chassis and I got the radiator in, pedals and the axle centered in the back ready to start the links tommorow. Let me know if something looks jacked up. Not sure on the pedals right now, might change them after the floors are in. Tons of pics, Roxy will load them in a minute.

Just some constructive criticism (how I learned things the hard way so you don't have to):

Build your firewall--or at least mock it up--quickly. There's a lot of stuff that hangs on the firewall or placement is dictated by the firewall, like:

Ditch the stock pedal brackets. You can use the stock pedals, but the stock brackets will be a bit of a bitch to get integrated into the firewall. You can use a thicker piece of sheet to build the firewall (~1/8") where the brake and clutch masters go and hang them on it.

Push the master cylinder as high as you dare (too high and it gets hit by rocks in a rollover). If it sits too low, it is a biatch to get the steering shaft past it and pointed at the steering box.

Your pedal swing will also be affected by the firewall. That space is at least 4" shorter than you had in your Runner. They won't swing as far forward, and the bottom of the pedal is also closer to the floor (closer to your heel than the ball of your foot!)

then again, if you're building a "doghouse" firewall and expanded metal foot wells...I'll just shutthefawkup now and let you get back on with your build!

Looks good--nice work on cleaning the tubing, :roxy:!

I know I should ditch the stock assembly but it was a good package deal. I will look at them again today, full hydro so no worries of a shaft. And the joints are Hendrix Joints, he sells them.

Well spent another day at the shop today, first we ran out to C-Fab here in town and picked up abunch of tabs and set up for shock tuning when the time comes. Roxy finished up the frame, it sure looks pretty, thanks baby. I chopped off the back of the frame, made a link crossmember and made up some lower mock up links and tacked them in. Let me resize them and I will post in a few.

Well, no pics as there still on my phone, but have made progress, 4 link is done, just needs plateing and finish the truss, pass floor is done just needs sheeting. I started cleaning some of the unwanted crap off the motor, put on new PSC pump and mocked up the ram. I will try to get pics up this weekend as I will be there for the 4 day weekend:flipoff2: This build is taking alot of work, oh and Roxy ordered the LCE ftoy header lastnight.

I think your wife approves!!

Limit straps on the rear?--looks like a ton of droop!! (Keep that rear CV happy!)
Plan for bracing on the bent tube link crossmember?

When you mount your seats, try to pin them in double shear, rather than bolting them in. You'll put them in and take them out a ton while you're building it. Takes under 5 minutes, rather than 30+. You'll still put them in and take them out quite a bit while you're completing the build and prepping it for racing.

I noticed on Desertoy's MarlinCrawler FToy KOH prep thread that another firewall is required to separate the fuel cell from the driver...probably should mock that up before something else gets in the way.

The fun in making sure you have enough swing in the clutch pedal before hitting the floor board.
I made my floor boards follow the side down tubes like you are doing and used the stock pedal assy, and found it is pretty close to where the clutch pedal needs to stop at. Don't want to come up short with the clutch pedal throw.
Looking good, can't wait to see this at KOH.

Robert, I too dread the "crap work". I'm test fitting the steering hoses, running
electrical cables, the hard brakelines are next, then the  sheet metal.
Your F-Toy's coming along nicely, keep it up, you'll get there. :grinpimp:
BTW, I got the same adjustable column you have. :D

Mr Roxy
12-07-2009, 06:48 AM
Yeah, on the firewall if you follow the down bar to look good its right there, I actually cut little slits in the sheet for the pedals to get that extra 3/4 of an inch, hope its enough. Gary once the sheetmetal is in I will start plumbing and wireing.

I pushed my driver's side floor board about 1" in front of the side down tubes.
I also cut the brake and clutch pedal arms about 3" shorter than stock so the pedal would be under the ball of my foot---this makes them a bit stiffer, but also quicker (like a short-throw shifter). The clutch pedal still just hit the floor, so I moved it up by shortening the rod at the clutch master.

I used a dual-diaphragm booster out of a 3rd gen 2wd (smaller diameter for easier fit @ steering column, but still dual-diaphragm) and a 13/16" master cylinder...so the brakes are strong, but not too stiff.

I thought those were little slits cut in the sheetmetal, that or a reflection. :D
Like MT4runner, I cut my pedals and repositioned them to set at the ball of my feet and not point up so bad, then played with the push road on the clutch master cylinder to make sure I got enough clutch.

You are doing a serious push on this car to get done, keep up the good work. :smokin:

Robert, you should be able to drill the front perch and move the axle foreword an inch or two without changing springs. Make sure you look at the clearance between your pitman arm and your tie rod though. It might be close.

Thanks everyone, picked up my batteries today, and found what I think will make a perfect muffler. They're the little resignators off of trans am's. They're about 8 in long and 6 in wide and should fit up high perfectly, hope its not too loud but got it for 10 dollars so not much of a loss.

I was gonna question the shock mounts on that long tube because I've read a lot of "That shock mount isn't strong enough for the desert" stuff on PBB but that large sheetmetal gusset addressed my concern for that tube.

Not yet. I just came home and they are still working away at the shop. It may not be til tomorrow until they start it. Robert has the steering plumbed but he forgot to print off the directions and he wants to double check that before they start it.

I had to run around today and get them syn hydro oil...not so easy to find on a Saturday. Evidently we didn't think about having it here already when the time came to start the buggy  We lucked out. I called 4 Wheel Parts to ask if they had any. They didn't but one of the guys had some at home. He met me after he got off work with it, which was pretty damned cool for someone that we don't even know! :roxy:

email it to yourself, then go to youtube and upload it there.

if it's too big to email, then plug in the phone to your computer and drag it off from the same place you drag pictures.

Sorry I havnt been updating this but I have been at the shop everynight, even on my lunch break. We are so close but just a lot of little stuff to do. I am on duty today so have some free time, but losing a day in the shop. I wanna thank some great people that have been helping out, and also the kickass vendors on this site that have helped us out. Brian at Frontrange for getting the ARP knuckle studs to me next day, RPM for hooking us with gauges, Custom Splice for a real nice winchline and fairlead, Ballistic if everything works out they really stepped up, Mike my co-driver came out for a few days and straight kicked ass on the wiring and Nick will be here next weekend to help final everything up and hopefully be there when it drives out of the shop for the first time. When I left yesterday, Matt from 60NINE axles was out and was doing all my finish welding, you rock. Its finally feeling like this thing might hit the lakebed afterall. Thanks to everyone else that I have forgotten about as I have only been sleeping about 4 hours a night and cant wait for KOH so I can rest:flipoff2:. http://www.pscmotorsports.com/tech/reservoir_tips.pdf

Good tech for every one.

I tell most people the same thing when it comes to feeding the pump. Imagine you had a 5 gallon bucket of power steering fluid and you had 60 seconds to empty it into that pump, how would you do it. Basicly that is what the reservoir is doing, and if you cant get it in the pump, the pump cant get it out, the cavitation, then failure. Pumps only pump, they don't suck.

We use suction rated hose and crimping shouldn't be a problem if its plumbed properly.

Build's looking great, don't hesitate to call me if you have any more steering things pop up, or if there is anything else we can help with.

It's hard to get a great paint job with rattle cans in a dusty shop. I've found that it works well to put 2 good coats on and letting it cure out well, then going over it with some 200-grit sandpaper to knock down the drips, runs, or dust pimples. I wish I had the time to do it right but at this point we're just lucky its getting painted at all. The problem is I will paint a section, it will dry and then the guys will lean on it with their greasy hands, leaving marks. So, I've been cleaning up marks, going over them again and then hitting them with a clear overcoat. Plus I'm trying to paint while they are trying to work on things. Pretty sure those are 39.5 Iroks.

If you upgrade to a V6 (1") master cylinder and dual-diaphragm brake booster, you can stop those big meats pretty well with stock rear brakes and discs up front. Dual-diaphragm boosters are found on 2nd gen Turbo trucks, all V6 (2nd and 3rd gen) trucks, and all 3rd gen trucks--inc. 22RE and 2wd.

If you need space to fit your steering shaft, the Turbo trucks and 3rd gen 2wd trucks have a smaller diameter double-diaphragm booster.

Might be the camera angle but it looks like there is more wheel travel and shock travel on the front. Also have you cycled the rear suspension looks like the tires will hit the shock when the axle is articulated. Hope it just the camera.

Everything has been cycled, the front has just shy of 5 in uptravel, and the bumps bottom about 3/8 of an inch before the shock. The rear at full stuff just barely doesnt rub, I got really lucky.

Busted knuckle studs, got them fixed the night before LCQ, a tense day during the 2nd day of LCQ hoping not too many people got in before you, getting in, and getting it all together for the big race!!

I was at CP 7 at the top of Hell's Gate (so was Greg/FToy 38) just waiting for you guys to get there. Greg and I were also monitoring the Bender freq, and our hearts dropped when you said you were DNF'ing worried your car would melt. :( what tid it turn out to be?

Thanks, Shawn!

The initial problem on Aftershock was on the rocklight circuit. We had a meltdown on the circuit breaker, for whatever reason.

Shortly after completing the trail, on the way to Hell's Gate, we lost the main ignition circuit. I replaced the fuse, but didn't know what caused the short. A hundred yards down the course, it popped again. I can't say for sure, but I think it was in the brake light circuit, powered off of the ignition switch. We're going to take our time and completely rewire the car, breaking everything down into individual ciruits, with a proper fuse block. I like the 12 Volt Guy panel, but it's not a complet system.

I wired in the distributor and fuel solenoid, and we drove out under our own power. A couple miles later, we had a drivetrain issue. Pretty sure it was a trunnion bearing letting go.

I had a great time, and wouldn't hesitate to do it again! I think if he doesn't get deployed next year, Robert would too.

Thanks to Robert for the ride, to our crew chief Nick, our head chef Tina, Ape Eaters, Rich, Soundguy, and the Texas crew, Hobie's pit crew, Brett Porter's pit crew, and everybody else that lent a hand. It seemed that anytime we needed anything, people wanted to jump in and help us out. Truly awesome!

The best thing of all was that through the entire course, we could hear Carrie Steiner running the Bender radio relay. It was a great comfort to know that no matter where we were, we could get help. She spent the entire race up on Fissure Mountain, just for us. I never saw her after the race, but I really want to say THANK YOU CARRIE! :D

And let's not forget the support of our wives, even if they don't understand what makes us want to do this! :D:D:D

PSC helped us out with some last minute steering issues, Chris at FOA set up the bypass shocks, and BFG hooked us up with a set of their KRT tires.

In The Pink Racing managed to put in 6 miles in the LCQ, plus 49 in the big race, for a total of 55 miles. $550 to BRC from the Tin:skull:Benders for our efforts!

Thanks for the heads-up that it's not complete...my buggy is running, but not wired up for full on race duty.

XJ's/MJ's have a nice integrated fuse panel that has relay slots built-in, if you're looking for something to stuff under the dash to wire to--with the 12vg panel in front for switching.

To Aaron, Rich and Steve thanks for getting my ass out there and a place to sleep while there. I couldn't have afforded the trip if we weren't splitting cost.

Robert and Mike thanks for the chance. Y'all made it into the big race but you made an opportunity for the rest of us to ride those coat tails.

Nick and Tina thanks for the FOOD and the hospitality (best pit mom EVAR). Nick thanks for letting a few gomers you've never met do what they know how to do the best way they know how without second guessing for a second. It's not often that a group of "strangers" can work together under stress without butting heads and that happened this week from what I can tell.

The rest of the Benders thanks for the camaraderie y'all are a hell of a group of people. Y'all were all competing against each other but for the most part it seemed when the chips were down and a Bender needed something it was handled. That was really cool to see.

And with that I say good day :flipoff2:

I said I would only do it this year but I think the bug has been caught, so I will hopefully be back next year, and hope all my friends will be too. Alot of work needs to be done to the car, but I am going to take a week or so off and enjoy life again. Thanks again goes out to Mike, your a great co dawg, Nick and Tina, I dont know where to start, but thanks a million for everything, Rich you the man, you worked your ass off, and Aaron, Steven, Gary and Jody and Jeff and Billy and anyone else I forgot, couldnt have done this without you guys. Well, time to start updating, tommorow I am going to start rewiring the whole buggy, useing GM weatherpak connectors. I will update where the short is when I find it. 12 Volt Guy is fully a stand up vendor and is fixing the switches that melted. The biggest news is picking up BillyBob13 as a sponser for this year. He putting together a fj80 front end for me with his new knuckles and highsteer arms. I think it will definatly open up a new direction for people wanting width and strength and stay Toyota. I will be switching to a PSC 8" double ended ram and ditching the elocker for a detroit for simplicity. DMS Fab will be helping me fix my propane mounting to switch it to a style like Hobie's rig, and redoing some of the sheetmetal to help it flow better and give me more storage. We are definatly gonna try to work torwards KOH 2011.

Well, pulled the car apart this weekend, the wire to one of the rear rocklights was shorted to the frame which was the first of our problems. We went over the rest of the wireing and cant find any issues, so we think maybe there was just too many amps pulling on the ignition circiut or there is a pinch we are missing. The one thin we messed up on, is we should have loomed the wires, we were in a rush and regret it. Will follow this up when I have the money to loom and buy the new connectors and the one relay I need.

So will you add a separate sub-relay to the Ign circuit for accessories that comes on when the Ign relay is triggered...or just go with a larger main Ign relay?

Sucks to hear about that rock light short. :mad3:
Was that then pulling on your Ign circuit?

Well, I am sure thats what caused the smoldering meltdown, so I think it might have overloaded the rest of the ign curcuit. Even after we cut it out, it maybe weekened some where else, if that makes sense.

Thanks Robert. That post reinforces the idea I've had to use relays to isolate
different functions of the electrical system. Engine/computer on one relay,
lights on another, and accessories on another. All the relays would be activated
by the ignition switch.

I have them on completely separate relays--IGN on one relay, Headlights on one relay, Fuel pump on one relay, Low amp Accessories (12V plug/GPS/radio) are direct fused....because sometimes I like to have my lights and radio on when the IGN is off.

Edit: to add to what apeters89 said, I have fusible links from my battery to my +12V bus before the relays.

Mr Roxy
