: CV shaft/ hub assembly?

Just got a quick question I figured some of you guys could help me out with. My buddy's got a 98 ford rander 4x4. The problem is that it will not engage into fourwheele drive.
The transfercase is locking in and all that so I started to look a little deeper into it. I noticed that on the passanger side I could eisily turn the CV shaft by hand and while doing so the front driveshaft would also turn. I also noticed that I could move the CV shaft in and out about 1/2 an inch or so from inside the wheel bearing assembly.
I took the front hub off and noticed that there is a C-clip in there to hold the cv shaft in the wheel bearing assembly but it seems to me that there should be something else. Because whenever I pull on the CV shaft and make it tight inside the hub then everything works right. Meaning I am unable to turn the cv shaft by hand.
I am just curious if there is a retaining nut inside there that is now gone or if I am just a tard. Any help is appreciated.

the retaining ring is the only thing there- it is a one time use part, you must replace it now, if it doesn't seat properly it will allow leakage and the hub won't lock, you have a pvh system there- 15" to lock, 7" to unlock, .5" in 30 seconds max leak at hub. sounds like someone has been in there and didn't seat the ring properly...
