I have 2-hi, 4-low, neutral, but no 4-high.

rebuild time? or is it a linkage adjustment?

Id try disconnecting the linkage at the case to see if you can hit all 4 ranges from there. The gate plate thingy is attatched to the transmission, so if one of the bushings in the link is shot it could make hitting 4 hi tough.

I'll give it a try this afternoon. thanks for the tip. was hoping not to have any 'major' work to do on this van until spring time.

Could be the little plastic shift pads on the fork inside that are worn out too... I had the same exact thing happen to mine on my powerstroke.

1356s are pieces of cake to work on... Let me know if you need any help.

quick question:

I'm planning on rebuilding the transfer case this weekend. it's a manual shift in a 2003 Quigley 4x4 van conversion. it's what quigley used. however, since ford stopped using the 1356 in 97, what do I tell the parts monkey when I order the rebuild kit?

or are all the rebuild kits the same?

pretty sure all 1356's are created equal...

only real difference is if it is setup for manual or auto shift. the rear case half is slightly different but everything except the internal shifting rails swap over. can't remember if the pattern on the shift rail guide is different. i swapped the output shaft from a late one to an early one and the only difference was no provision for a mechanical speedo gear. '90? and up used the VSS in the rear diff to feed the speedo.

Not to hi-jack the OP's thread, but that FSB write up says the bronco 1356's have a flange on the rear output, like on the front. I wonder what would be involved in putting a bronco tcase in a pickup?

You'd have 2 options, either change the driveshaft to one with a slip, or change the output shaft and rear case half to the pickup slip yoke output. I'd go for the first one of those two.

I'll have to look into that, I hate slip yokes...

could you just change the output to one from a bronco instead of swapping the whole thing?

(I really need to look at the article before I try rebuilding this thing...)
