Ok, I'm going to be making my jackstands, and need to order the tube soon.

The center will be 1.75x.188 dom.

The three legs will be 1x.188 wall.

My questions is, can I get by with hrew for the legs? I have to order dom online and pay shipping, so getting hrew locally would save quite a bit.

I really can't see it making that much of a difference. The legs will also be braced to each other, and to the center tube at the bottom also. The only force they'll be seeing for the most part will be the vehicle weight.

i think hrew for the legs will be fine if the main 1.75 tube goes to the floor. i would think about going with a thicker tube for the main tube also.

mine mostly 3/16th

I'm using 1.25" acme thread, so I have to get something that fits that. It's that or .25" wall, 2" dom. Somebody on here measured, and their pipe stands that everybody uses was .105-.115, so .188 should be fine, I would think.

Will do.

All my Sumner Bros pipe stands have 1/8" or less thickness for everything and they have a 1 ton capacity. Are you making yours like an actual pipe stand? with a big washer that holds the center tube? THAT WASHER is a critical part for having that capacity.

No, I'm welding a nut on the center tube, it will be all threaded adjustment, with a jamnut on it.

The plates are going to be welded to a third nut that has a set screw on it, so you can switch out styles. v'd for tube, c for frames, etc.

Thanks for that picture though, I though about doing mine so the legs were removable, and couldn't figure that out. Now I have to decide if I want to go that route or not.

For a strength comparison a local shop sells these folding models which they rate for 4800#'s and they have proof tested them to 12,000#'s, not too many parts on them are over 1/8" thick:

After having built more than a few sets I just buy Ridgids now.

why would you wast your money on dom for jack stands:confused: mild steal is plenty strong.

i wanted fine adjusment, plus one leg is going to have a short piece of 5/8" acme thread to adjust the stand for slight slopes, such as my driveway. I also wanted interchangeable heads.

I'm sure I'll wish I bought them before this is over, though.:flipoff2::laughing:

Because I need the dimensional tolerance for the i.d. to ensure the acme rod fits. I also need it for the pieces that slip inside each other.

Honestly, you are over thinking things. The pipe stands I posted a link to are stupid simple, you can make/buy different heads for them. I use these things every day at work. I used them in my own personal shop too. After using them, theres no way I would work without them.
I realize you want "fine" adjustment. Well I can work with .1 degree incriments with these, that good enough?
I wouldnt bother making the legs bolt on. Thats just a heavier duty model that breaks down for transportation.
Not trying to make it a "buy it instead of build it" thread. Just my opinion

I have a 19x23 garage, thrown in the washer/dryer/water softener, floor cabinet, drill press, 15' bench, 2 air compressors, welder, generator, torch, press, cherry picker, 6'x6' toolbox, etc...space is at a premium. I won't be using these stands all that often. If I can break them down so they go on a shelf, all the better.

Take this:

and throw this in it:

If it wasn't for that, I would fully agree with you on not making them removable. Who knows, I'm in a time crunch, so it's possible they won't get made that way, anyway. I might not even do the adjustable leg right now, might cut it off and deal with it later.

I need to have them ready by thanksgiving week. My dad's coming down for a week long wrench fest.
