: Scout vs Ford box
Jason M 09-25-2002, 08:36 AM Here is an interesting comparison.
THe scout box is on top. Pretty long.. The ford box is on the bottom. It looks to be somewhat smaller....

Jason M 09-25-2002, 08:39 AM The ford box looks like it will allow better fitment if you have your axle moved further forward than stock.. I was looking at having to modify the Shock mounts to fit a scout box..
What a headache....
Anyone else try a ford box??
If not it probably would be a nice addition!!!
As long as you use the sag pump with it..
Aggro 09-25-2002, 08:46 AM You might want to consult some eb guys (if the same box) I think they *may* have problems with the sector shaft shearing.
Jason M 09-25-2002, 09:00 AM It is different than the EB box. it actually fits a 79-80 or so fullsize bronco. I talked to the Lakerat and I guess he hydro's them all the time with good success...

All I know about the bronco boxes is that the shaft sheers. And everyone in my club that has an EB runs an f-150 box. Not sure if the later bronco's have the same box as the f-150 or not. Looks like a good idea. Try it out. :D

It is not the EB box. It is the F150 box...
:D
And it is still in Carson right now.
Probably next to your springs ;)

hahaha, So I should go get it too?? ;) My buddy is running an f-150 box on his j##p and it's worked out really nice. However, it swings on the rear side of the box, which meant he had to push it really far forward on the frame. Unlike the scout box with the arm swinging towards the front (right??)
Jason M 09-25-2002, 10:16 AM Nah, but you could drop the daash pod and the brackets off at His house when you pick up the springs or something...
:D
I was mistaken. This box is a Ford 4x4 box. So it swings the same direction as the scout box and the sector shaft is shorter than the 4x2 box...
Now I understand :)
BJ On Roids 09-25-2002, 02:31 PM those pitman arms look nice and flat
damn, we need more steering options over here :(
be careful not to put a box on from a vehicle that steers from behind the diff
you go left and car goes right :D  but im sure you thought of all that!!
texican 09-25-2002, 02:33 PM MACE I WON THE SCOUT BOX IN THE AUCTION....IF YOU WANT IT HOLLER, WE CAN EITHER SEND IT STRAIGHT TO YOU OR, i CAN SEND THE ONE I HAVE HERE TO YA.

texican 09-25-2002, 07:13 PM Just thought I would post an update on the "Perils Of Mace"
Got with him a little while ago, I'm sending the Scout box to Matt in the morning to have it drilled and tapped, and worked a swap with him for his Saginaw box. He was about ready to burn it or trade it for a lowered Wrangler, with wire wheels:flipoff2:

Hold off on sending the box off. At the FWD meeting last night I saw 3 jeeps that guys had done their own tap job on their boxes.
They tapped the front round area and the top square cover.
They did it at home and it works like a charm......
Even Mace can do this :flipoff2:

ChevotaSS 09-25-2002, 08:12 PM Im so glad someone decided to do this comparison. IM running a 79 f-150 ford 4x4 box on my cruiser. I love it. works great. now im just trying to find a write up for hydro assist. right now the box turns my 39 swampers just fine. I recomend it to anyone. And its alot easier to find than a scout box.
RHINO 09-25-2002, 08:42 PM They tapped the front round area and the top square cover.
where have you been nolen, thats about a real old homegrown hydro tap location
Jason M 09-26-2002, 09:08 AM The cool thing about Matt is that he also tweakes the inside of the box for a bit better flow..
Nolen, Go search Ih8mud.com for info on how to port that box ;)
:flipoff2:
Yep I am going to do the Scout box.
(Butch you are the man!!! What is your beer of choice? shiner I assume?)
The Ford 4x4 box in the picture. Is ported for hydro actually. According to Matt Hodges it shoudl work (no it has not been tried out yet)
Chevota, if you want more pics of where it was ported I can probably get some for you.
Jason M 09-26-2002, 09:14 AM and the top location..

More Pics!!!!
I've been wanting to do this to my box but am too much of a puss to go at it blind.
Jason M 09-26-2002, 09:44 AM Do you see the pics above you??????
:flipoff2:
ChevotaSS 09-26-2002, 02:02 PM THANKS A TON FOR THE PICS!!
now i know my next project when i get home from week long wheeling up in canada :D
who should i contact about that setup? whos box was that?
Jason M 09-26-2002, 02:25 PM It belongs to a good buddy of mine in Carson City.
Here is what he had to say about doing the modification.
As far as where I tapped into the box is concerned, the tap on the top
actually goes through the wall of the cylinder just adjacent to the worm
gear housing sealing surface. The piston has a generous chamfer in this
area (on the order of .250") so the pressure signal should be fairly
constant in this area. However, just to be sure that the piston doesn't
"seal" against the worm gear housing, I cut some clearances in the
piston to allow fluid by (left turn pressure signal). This will only be
a concern when at full right lock trying to steer back to the left.
I'm sure that this all makes complete sense to you so I have been
taking pictures of the reassembly process.
The other tap into the box is at the forward edge where there is an
internal transfer tube leading from the worm gear housing/spool valve
area all the way forward to the very front of the box so the pressure
signal can get to the front side of the piston (right turn pressure
signal). I wasn't sure what kind of clearance I had to the front side
of the piston at full left lock as well as how thick the wall of the
housing was so I didn't tap into the very end of the box in the middle
of the big round portion. I'll take some pictures of this also. I
really hope that this works because, if so, I will suddenly be fairly
well versed at these Ford boxes and their derivatives.
You should be able to do the modification yourself without much trouble. It sounds easy enough...

I was just hopeing for a little better pic of the top location. Or I guess I could just get off my lazy ass and go look at the top of my box to see if it makes sence.:D
