chris fresh 11-01-2009, 05:42 PM i'm going to do something similar very soon, what i really need right now is an actual vise.cause the vice grip thing is gettin old
Todd W 11-01-2009, 06:01 PM Search.
Myself and a few others got some kickass deals on vises from a company selling S&D units that were like new...
I think they raised their prices 10-15% but still WAY cheaper than new!!

Was $176 when I got it, still a screaming deal at $249.
dopeassjackson 11-01-2009, 06:19 PM at work we use a low profile vise that one of the machinist made about 10yrs ago. its real long so you can let it touch the neck on the press. you usualy dont need to clamp it down.
if you go with a vise and not a clamp make sure its got a steped jaw so it dosnt get holes drilled into it.
cajun666 11-01-2009, 06:31 PM i got one of those cheap hf one i never use it yet do so i can't tell how good the work
PAToyota 11-01-2009, 06:54 PM I picked up a couple of these (http://www.woodcraft.com/Family/2005235/Quick-Set-Drill-Press-Hold-Down.aspx) and find I use them more than the Vise-Grip ones. I also have a drill press vise, but use these most of the time when I just need to clamp something down.

Todd W 11-01-2009, 07:40 PM I picked up a couple of these (http://www.woodcraft.com/Family/2005235/Quick-Set-Drill-Press-Hold-Down.aspx) and find I use them more than the Vise-Grip ones. I also have a drill press vise, but use these most of the time when I just need to clamp something down.
Cool.
I saw those too but wasn't sure they would hold stuff tight enough for STEEL.
ChiScouter 11-01-2009, 07:45 PM I only clicked on the first link and I have those delta ones with the swivel pad. As you lock in the vice grip the work almost always moves a little bit. When you are trying to do precise work it is very frustrating. I still have mine and haven't used them in years. Ive been using C clamps which more often than not can be a pita. Id like a better solution
nissancrawler 11-01-2009, 08:01 PM How do those work? Are you guys drilling holes through your tables? I would have to cut the stud off to work on mine.

Jancy used to have a C-Clamp with a non-rotating head... might be worth finding and adapting to a T slot, although it's discontinued so I wonder how good it was ;)
If you find something let me know.
The other option is to use the block and clamp set.
Import Set (http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=SW505-6544&PMPANO=0515996&PMKANO=236&PMKBNO=2035&PMPAGE=17&PARTPG=INLMPI)
Supposedly Non-Import Set (http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=SW319-8531&PMPANO=0515996&PMKANO=236&PMKBNO=2035&PMPAGE=17&PARTPG=INLMPI)
Obviously not as quick as a sliding clamp though ;)

I think they are made for tables like this.

I have a T-Slot table so I would have to adapt, or use the block and clamp set.
I believe they also make other versions for a t-slot table.
Which is what I`m after... if they are worthy - thus this thread ;)

Haven't had a problem. They clamp down pretty hard.

I've got slots through my table like the picture Todd posted.

ah, that makes sense. I have the t-slot table, also.
Bushwhacker 11-09-2009, 09:42 AM I use the harbor freight vice grip type clamp on mine with a piece of wood under what I'm drilling. Has worked for what I need.
So whats the difference between the $50 vises and the $300 plus vises?
I have a harbor freight vice and the threaded cast piece has broken and been welded a few times when I really clamp it down.
4x4mike 11-09-2009, 10:04 AM I've got a HF vise and it works well for what I need it for. I've got a smaller bench top press though so my table isn't that big. I use some 1/2 carriage bolts with washers and wingnuts (under the table) to hold everything down.
