: Gen Right 4 Link Stretch - Exhaust Options

I'm finishing up a rear stretch and 4 link project on my TJ. Wondering what options there are for a compact exhaust with the 4 link, tailpipe routing etc. I went with coilovers and their shock towers, so there's some extra room. Searched my arse off, and read all the stretch threads. I'm sure it's covered, but I didn't find it.

Dump it in front of the rear axle

That makes it really loud, I had mine like that for about a year. I finnally got around running it all the way out. I will look for some pics.

Mine dumps behind the belly pan but before the axle, I havent had any issues.

However, a few years ago i had a TJ w/ a Claytons LA. It dumped at the belly pan and the passanger side upper johnny joint would "melt" after a few months. It was stock WB.

I would imagian that the silver TJ above would have had similar issues with the CO fluid getting hot.

I do want to get it towards the back, so I think Jeeperman14wheel is on to something. Using the Genright Comp tank, and pushed axle back as far as possible with EXT corners, it's gonna be tight.

You guys using the stock cat and replacement muffler? Who's got a small quiet, or at least a low volume rumble that works well? I'm not trying to make it sound like anything other than the 6 cylinder it is....

And myself this is the muffler I want to run.
The Hushpower.
http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=hushpower&dds=1

The way I want to do it is replace the cat and use a bolt on flange to connect the cat to the muffler then route the exhaust pipe out the back up and over the rear axle trying to get its as far to the back of the frame as possible. I dont want to take any chances of fumes into the passenger area since I have kids.

I have a Magnaflow with a very small cat. It will not pass smog now with a high flow after market cat and the muffler is way to loud. The package is very small and fits nicely, but I sure could use a quieter system that passes smog!

I get the impression the magnaflows are going to be louder than I want, and I wish I could dump out past the tank like above, but my coilovers are embedded in the frame and wont allow for that. Didn't know about the Spyntec muffler, will check that out. I like the mini keg looking cat, that's a big space saver. I think that was in the links above. Any other options?

Is it actually SPIN TECH? www.spintechmufflers.com

Buddy just put these on his TJ. Sounds a little mean but nothing bad at all. Really nice rich sound and the whole set up is really short so all you have to do is have an exhaust shop/friend get some tubing and run it special out to the back.

I would say run it up and over the upper link and then follow the frame rail back and exit.

Are you required to have a muffler to pass your emissions test where you're at? If not, just put the factory cat back on and weld a down turned tip to it.

That's the way I have mine right now, and it's loud, but sounds fine.

Really? Is it throwing any codes? Did you reinstall the O2 sensor after the cat? I have had mine for over two years without any problems. It is a little loud but I like it. I attached a quick clip to give an idea of the sound.

No codes at all, but will not pass. I never had a problem until I changed the whole exhaust system and yes it has both O2 sensor installed.

I pulled the cat out of one of my TJ's and welded a bung back on the 'splice' in for the O2 and it has passed every year since (2 or 3 years now). It still has the complete stock exhaust except cat delete...I don't think changing the muffler or rerouting the exit would change anything.

I routed mine under and between the coilover and the gas tank. It was a tight fit and required some customization but it wasn't too bad. I bought a DIY exhaust kit from the cheapest place I could find on the internet http://www.mandrel-bends.com/catalog/builder-kits-33/super-builder-kits-47/ and one of those 2 1/4" to 2 1/4" v-rings . I welded the v-ring up to the back of my STOCK cat and then made the exhaust system from there, pulled it out and welded it up. It turned out great, I have no interference. Took some pics.
Oh and that muffler I have is freaking loud and obnoxious, I sound like a loud rice rocket going down the streets, I think its a little better since it wore in or maybe I got used to it.

For those with the exhaust dumped at the skid, did you ever run into getting exhaust fumes inside with the top on?

My TJ has a Magnaflow high-flow cat and Flowmaster 40-series (WAY too loud, but it's what I got), and passes smog at the lowest end of the scale. I've never even been questioned on it.

Nope, never smell it. Make sure the exit is pointing down at the ground and not straight. Floor isn't hot either. Passes smog easily and I am in Commiefornia.

I agree, my heep setup is almost identical regarding coilovers, rotated calipers etc.... so that caught my eye. Hey VKing, is that a Genright tank in there? I like how you were able to bring it out the back, that's exactly what I'm shooting for. Nice, now my only issue is getting it QUIET...lol.

Yeah it turned out pretty nice, I was really happy with the results. It only took 2-3 hours to do.

Yes that is a genright tank, the standard one not the extra capacity one. I pushed that thing back as far as I could. I really didnt think I would make it work slipping between the coilover and the tank since my old setup with no coilovers rubbed really bad. Its all in the angle you bring that pipe in on.

As far as being loud, I think I would of gone with a flowmaster hushpuppy muffler if I was to do it again, its almost the same size as what I put in there. I actually planned on swapping it out at some point but I got used to it or its really not that bad I guess...

V10King, I just realized you have the EXT tank, which allows you to run the exhaust out under the frame rail. My COMP tank doesn't have that front corner notch, so I'm going to have to dump it somewhere around the axle. Not quite ideal, but I chose the comp tank for long term flexibility... I still like what you did and will copy about 80% of it... :D

Exhaust went on today. Used a short magnaflow cat and a Hushpower muffler. Right now it's just extended towards the rear axle and dumped down. I thought the hushpower would be pretty quiet.... but it's not, it's freaking LOUD. Not what I wanted, but I took a chance.

I wonder if taking the exhaust pipe up over the upper link and back towards the rear would quiet it down any? Probably not.... I may decide to bag this setup and try to fit a Spintech in there.... I won't be happy with this long term.....

On a good note, I hacked out the O2 bung from the old cat and installed in in the Magnaflow. No check engine lights so far and no changes required to O2 sensor wiring etc...

Scott,

I too used a magnaflow cat and hushpower shorty with a turn down. It is loud and not exactly what I wanted but it does fit nice.

Later I found out the 12" hushpower isn't really advertised as a muffler, it is sold as a resonator. The 18" hushpower is a true muffler (according to flowmaster) but it won't fit as neat as the 12" version.

Sportcoupe, that's about what mine looks like, but I did use the 18" muffler, not a resonator. I put the cat towards the front a few inches but still protected by the skid. The 18" muffler pushed it back a ways, angled it some to achieve what I wanted, but even though it's the real muffler, it's still way loud for me. Easy install though given the sizes, that had great value.

Scott, I would think a complete tailpipe from the muffler back would quite our loud jeeps down alot. Please post if you do this and if there is substantial improvement.

I had wished I bought the 18" hushpower as I do have room but it seems yours is loud too.

I wonder is we can install a turn down with a built in baffle if that'll help? I really don't have room for a tailpipe out the back.

For those of you dumped after the skid, how are you hanging it? I just made a flat skid and there is almost no room so mine keeps rattling.

I'll try to get some pics this weekend, but we ended up making a new bracket right at the engine/tranny area and using an existing bolt to tie it to. My old exhuast was too close to the belly up, and when the engine flexed it would hit and constantly worked the front header to exhuast pipe connection loose. I put up with that shit for a few years, and now due to that bracket, and the stock one at the lower tranny spot, it's rock solid, and moves as it should with the engine. I didn't add anything to support the muffler and don't think I'll need to. I'll know Saturday after a good break in run. :D

If you look at Sportcoupe's pic above, that's the same diameter muffler as mine... mines just longer... bwahaha.... :D
