Yeahhhh... about the new mog techies on board. Seems to me though they may only be able to help in the axle category. (See Mog9 post)

Wolfgang or anyone care to add in about Mog Tranny's? Trying to keep the heat down in mine. Its a new tranny and I can do 55 to 65 mph easy cause of the 300 turbo diesel swap. (Getting nearly 19mpg at 50 mph so far)

Anyway, I want to keep the tranny cool cause it was not made for those speeds. While off road the trannies dont seem to get hot at all... only at highway speeds. It is said the bronze bushings end up failing at constant sustained speeds like that. Well they fail prematurely compared to a Mog driven at speeds it was designed to drive at. (45mph or so) The debate is do they heat up due to lube inadequacies at these bushings or do they just get hot in general and it is these bushings that go first. If it is the latter then just an added in oil cooler will do..

Me and others are considering an added oil cooler that sprays the oil back into the tranny onto the gears and also via spray or more direct feed into the pocket that feeds the bronze bushings. Oil normally gets to this pocket via splash.

I will be very interested in this topic as well, as I will have a mog driveline behind my 3.0l Nissan engine.

I think that as it stands the few things that have been tried by the unimog community have had marginal results. I like the idea of the oil spray.

I think that until someone gives it a try, we will all be guessing and pulling at straws.

Unimog trannys; i only hate them.
Right know we have a transfercase in test (in Eggemann´s Toyo). This TC allows to use the stock torque tubes and any kind of Transmission. In the Toyo we use a TH400 with a Chevy 350 in front. This combination works very good so far, so we try to produce them if there is interest.

to use the theree covers on the side of the mog trans use the bottom cover(except have a finned alu. cover made)with a suction for a lube pump use the pto side cover (also finned alu.)as the return for the oil from the pump and the other cover just a finned alu. cover (this is providing you dont have crawler gears, pto, yada yada)

I do have a PTO. So that limits me. I am also concerned with an Aluminmun finned bottom plate due to potential rock and log dammage when off roading. Yeah. I will be going off road.

Also I am wondering if the finned covers are sorta a mute point iffff you have a radiant oil cooler. Simular to say an axilary oil cooler in a vehicle engine.

Never the less I have a friend I have passed ideas to that is considering developing the covers u speak of out of something like aluminum. He has a machine shop and is gathering information from a spare tranny as we speak. He is also looking at the oil spray system as well. . If you want me to keep u up dated on progress email me at mogcamp@hotmail.com.

Interesting info Wolfgang. Wonder what would be the best tranny combo behind an OM617A Trubo Diesel like I have in my Mog. What are your thoughts on your transfer case and a different tranny moutned in a 404 Mog. The frame flex has to be accounted for in the 404 in particular.

Mogs esp. 404s have a large amount of frame flexion. So much so the engine, tranny, body and bed etc. are hinged or have a swingng/twisiting mount to allow for frame flex. Wolfgang I'm sure knows this, but others may not.

But as long as you do a reasonable job of supporting the engine-driveline, you will be all set.

I am interested in the possibility. Especially since I am going to run a non mercedes engine to begin with.

Talk to Don Johnson maybe who has/had the competition Mog with a bow tie in it. He would be best to talk to about mounts and swaps. Maybe all you do is loose some frame flex capabilitites when u weld in new motor mounts etc. Then again maybe you end up breaking frames cause odd spots loose their flex. Remember the Germans were farrrr more percise about the what and whyyss in the way they did things when they designed the Mog. Least so I have been told. MB has a list somewhere of where you can bolt or weld with out damaging the frame. My understanding was it ended being only in places like the last foot of the tail of the 404.

sorry, the 1st line was to you geo, the 2nd line was for wolfgang.

I have talked quite a few times with dan about his chebby powered rig. I also have all the mercedes specs on where you can bolt stuff on.....(no welding allowed)

2as far as engine mounts.....it is super easy to just use the stock unimog mounting points and just build subframes for everything.

We use the stock mounts on the frame for the TC. We take the 203 low range in front of our TC, so you have an PTO!
For the transmission you have to remove or relocate the crossmember under the bellhousing. You can use any transmission who´ll fit to the motor. This conversion is a lot easier to do for an off road rig than for the stock UNIMOG. The Mog has only a very limited space for the motor.
