: DOM and bender question
Curt's_97 11-02-2009, 08:14 PM Gonna be grabbing a bender. It is basically a rip of the protools 105 standard duty. Comes with a 1.25" 120deg, 1.75" 240deg and 2" 120deg. I've found the cheapest place locally for 1.75" .120 wall which is the plan. The pro-tools website claims .095 easily by hand so i figure .120 would be alright. Now the real question, this popped up on craigslist today.
Material 1010 SRA DOM Tubing,
Outside diameter 1.842 Inches,
Inside diameter1.684 Inches, 20 foot lengths
ASKING $ 15.00 PER TUBE
Material 1010 SRA DOM Tubing,
Outside diameter 2.281 Inches,
Inside diameter 2.123 Inches, 20 foot lengths
Asking $ 20.00 Per TUBE
Material 1020 SRA DOM Tubing,
Outside diameter 1.299 Inches,
Inside diameter 1.112 Inches, 20 foot lengths
ASKING $15.00 PER TUBE
Material 1018-1022 A519 Seamless Tubing,
Outside diameter 1.792 Inches,
Inside diameter 1.557 Inches , 20 foot lengths
ASKING $30.00 PER TUBE
Honestly, this dom and bending thing is new to me so just wondering how thick a wall the standard 105 can take and mostly how close the diameters have to be. As i see it, for the last one [OD-ID]/2 = 0.1175 wall. Will 1.792 fit in a 1.75 die.
Sorry for the stupidity.
Thanks guys
bigtoy302 11-02-2009, 09:09 PM None of those will work. You need the exact size of tube for the die.
OKMudn 11-02-2009, 09:15 PM it will work for any length of tube u need on ur rig that doesnt require bending
RE:Todd 11-02-2009, 10:49 PM Is it pipe, because tubing is O.D. sized??
carwash 11-02-2009, 11:41 PM Those are some odd sizes...
300sniper 11-03-2009, 06:52 AM i am wondering if that material was custom made for a project. either way, you would need a custom die to bend it. at that price, i'd buy a bunch of it for projects around the shop (legs for work benches etc). even if it was a common size, i'd probably pass on the c1010 for a cage.
edit: i didn't see that there were some 1018-1022 choices there too.
Curt's_97 11-03-2009, 09:21 AM Thanks for the info guys. Does seem to be odd sizes. Not a bad idea grabbing a few sticks for cross bars etc but i can grab proper size more local to me for about $20 more a stick. Probably all the same once i consider gas money grabbing it. Too bad though, good prices.
Thanks again.
gashogjunkie 11-05-2009, 11:12 AM where did you find that bender and how much is it?

Can I ask where you went for pricing locally Ive been looking for a supplier online in Ontario and can't seem to find one.

It was a homemade jobber ripped off a Pro-tools. Bought it off my buddies Tim & Mike, sponsors here (TMR Customs). They're the new local Pro-tools dealer so they now have the real deal and didn't need it any more. They also bought it used from some dude around here. Who knows, the things a whore.

Online, don't know. But the best deal i found calling about a dozen people in southern Ontario was Alexander Metals & Alloys in Mississauga. they originally misquoted but still ended up cheaper then anywhere else. I payed $3.59 a ft for 1.75" .120 wall
cw8inchxj 12-03-2009, 02:14 AM are you guys talking hot rolled or colled rolled.....D.O.M. or just regular tubing because my local metal supplier told me for 1 3/4x.120 cold rolled dom 12$ a foot and 1 3/4x.120 hot rolled is 2.41 a foot so what exactly r u guys using for your cages?
Big91RustyBucket 12-03-2009, 07:39 AM Those are some odd sizes...
Agreed. While I can get those sizes they are odd..

This is what I'd do.
I'd figure out how much tube I could afford then offer him a price for a big group of all that stuff.
Even if you can't bend it there's a million and one uses for quality metal around the garage/shop. Especially at ~1$/ft.
Curt's_97 12-03-2009, 06:28 PM Since I posted this a month ago i've already grabbed some tube, the bender and finished the cage, well almost, still a few bars to go but that can wait. Probably could of used some for odds and ends but meh, more hassle to get it.
Thanks again guys.
Cheers
