I'm looking into building up a rig thru my shop to showcase some of the junk I've been working on and was thinking of a 74-83 Cherokee. My boss (wife) wants something that can haul the whole fam. I was thinking of a Scout II but in Canada there is more organic material then metal left on most of them. Would a SJ be too big for BC and PNW trails?
Thanks

FSJ's kick arse, Wagoneers, Grand Wagoneers, Cherokees, Cherokee Cheifs, all of them.
I'd try to find the newest one you can, they are prone to rust almost as bad as Scouts. Plus the late models got ultra plush on the interior. All the way up to like '92 I think, right about when the coiled Grand Cherokee came out. Remember, after '80 they were driver's side pig up front, before '79 it was on the passenger side.
I'd track down a '78ish F-250 HP Dana 44 (eight lug of course) bolt that puppy up SOA on stock springs (it's that easy), or 44044's if you're going big, move the perches out on a GM 14 bolt rear and bolt it to a set of F-150 leafs to move the axle back a couple inches, add front fenders from a J-10 or Cherokee Chief and graft the rear flares from a J-10, lock, gear, and tire to suit, add big pimpin' stereo and you've got a killer tow rig and capable trail rig that's not quite full-size, but big enough for lots of stuff. If you can find a Woody it's that much better. Woodies rule!

I'm going to start work on my 85 grand wagoneer as soon as I get it running.
Power everything, leather interior, Air conditioning, seating for 6 and room for all the gear and a decent drive train and Cool fake wood paneling :D
I have some 33" tires sitting around on 6 lug rims.
I'll do a combo body and suspension lift and then dop a little regearing.
With a 360 motor tf727 auto and an NP229 tcase I shoud be ok
I might replace the tcase with a NP208 later.

Try to get yourself a J20. D44 front, D60 rear. Pull the bed, go flatbed. Would do it myself, but I'm trying to restore mine as a tow rig.

BTW, do a search on here and you'll will find some great FSJ trail rigs.
The 2 door will give you more room to open up the rear wheel wells. Try to find M715 front fenders. They're huge. They'll let you run 36s with no lift.
