Find a local steel supplier and get a burn out. Depends on the type of steel you want but that is the cheapest way.

Definitely check out these guys:

I ordered a some large aluminum sections from them (7.5" x .25 6061-T6 round tube) and it was incredibly reasonable. You can buy 12" steel round stock by the inch:

Really fast shipping too.

Go to your local steel place and have them flame cut some a36 plate out. That is going to be your best bet.

Speedymetals!!

I've had very good luck with them as well.
Although would that hot rolled be up to life as a die, or would you need something harder?

Check the firesales on speedymetals regularly also. They have odd cutoffs/drops for cheap. May not have exactly what you need right now but if you watch and wait (i have it bookmarked) and it may come up.
looks like it's down for some reason but they've usually got quite a bit of stuff.

i checked speedy metals before i started the thread. in that diameter they can only ship 4in and 9/16 for some reason. even if they could ship a foot of it its $400 +shipping.

Have you thought about making a laminate die?
Say.. 1/4" to 1/2" thick plates that are stacked and permanently pinned/welded/whatever.. then finish machined as one piece.
Just a thought
