I want to put discs on my 9" and was wondering what all i would need to do it. Ive heard that explorer brakes work but then ive also heard that they need modifacation so which is it? I was thinking of getting this http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/builderrj60.aspx?id=1229&p=499.9500 But really didnt want to spend that kind of cash. Is there a cheaper way? Would junkyard backing plates bolt up to a big bearing 9?

two ford front rotors = 16$ a piece from parts store
two chevy 1/2 ton front calipers = ~22$ a piece from parts store
grinding down axle flanges to fit on rotor = free
making your own caliper brackets and welding them to said axle.......= priceless.:D

Talk to Currie first, it might not even be an option. None of their stuff will fit my application.(Narrowed 9", big ends, 35 spline custom axles) You will have a better chance if the rear is in stock configuration. I just started looking around but I couldn't find any off the shelf kit that would fit. So as suggested above you might have to go the custom route.

Caliper brackets can be had for 10 bucks a piece or so from Speedwaymotors.com. I jig nine inch rearend and do brake caliper brackets for oval track rearends all the time. They are for 12 inch diameter rotors.

Got part numbers on those rotors and calipers? Our parts store guys are idiots so I usually just hijack their computer and find the stuff myself.

I used the large piston 78 Cadillac Eldorado calipers w/e brake, F150 rotors, and caliper brackets from RoughStuff. Works well with 38's

Used a kit from Jeffsbroncograveyard & Napa rotors & calipers. Very happy with it, but it's complete on the bench. Haven't gotten the right proportioning valve, etc yet. Interested in what people have used for that aspect. FYI, mine's a '78 Bronco running 36" iRoks, 5:13s, & a Detroit in the rear.

i just got 78-79 ford bronco front rotors, they are nice and big and vented.

for the calipers i just made up a year for late model chevy's (i said 1985 blazer) front calipers.

but like i said. my yukon 31 spline shafts had to be ground down a little bit to fit inside the back of the rotor. i guess it would have been smarter to grind the rotor so i wouldnt have to worry about grabbing a spare out in the woods and having to grind it down (like what happened to me a few weekends ago)

and i made my own bracket out of 1/4" drilled and tapped it. welded it on, and gusseted it. some people said 1/4" would be too thin. so i added a pretty good size gusset.

This is probably a dumb question but did any of you guys need longer wheel studs to clear the rotor?

Im not concerned about the parking brake. I dont have one now and its never been an issue.

Sup Knucklehead, take a guess as to who this is on q-tec :D Also what do you mean by explorer brakes? Did you just use the rotors, calipers, or backing plate and all that jazz?

Just FYI heres what Currie responded in an Email when I was looking.
(Mine is a 79 F150 narrowed housing) Maybe some of the numbers will help you.

"From what it sounds like you have, No it wont work. It has the wrong housing end flange that the backing plate bolts too, and if the axles have the standard 79 p/u offset, it would be only 2.365" and that kit requires 2.5" to have the rotor and caliper to fit properly up to the backing plate. Also the center hub on the axles stock are 2.870" im not sure if your Strange axles are or not? but the Explorer hub is only 2.800". So i can pretty much garranty the explorer brake kit wont work in your application. I would recommend you look up Master Power Brakes, or ABS Power Brakes and tell them what you have and im sure they can make you up a kit."

good info i found on a mustang forum when i was looking into doing this. this info seems to dispute some of response you got from currie in regards to the brake backspacing. and it was written with currie's help!
