: Zuks on Tractor tires
Erik Dossett 09-25-2002, 01:17 PM Any others besides me on the POR?
There is this guy, in Alaska, not on the board as far a I know

and me
http://home.gci.net/~ddesigns/terra.html
Obviously, this a mud tire one a mostly rock crawling board. Just wonderin'. :flipoff2:
Don't like mud? Don't wheel in Alaska. AKDale was telling me about the mud eating his 33 Boggers AND his Hi Lift. I have been lucky and not gotten stuck since putting on the Terra Traks, - Dale will have to show me that bog sometime, so we can compare the tractor tires to the Boggers.
Pappa Smurf 09-25-2002, 03:54 PM they look like frickn quad tires and wheels
Shrock 09-25-2002, 07:19 PM There is one here in Houston, but I dont think he is on the board.
Rockrat 09-25-2002, 08:06 PM I saw one at zooki melt that had what looked to be skid steer/bobcat tires I guess what ever works for ya. I cant bitch I run THE MIGHT THORNBIRDS

The Guy from the first link reads the board and might post when he see's this thread.
here is one of his 31" terras vs. my terras :p

FLEXYSAMMY 09-26-2002, 09:17 AM Tires like that + samurai = no turing
Erik Dossett 09-26-2002, 09:26 AM So, two Alaskan Zuks on Terras, another Alaskan on 42" tractor tires (not a Zuk, but BEEFY ) and the one guy in Houston ( funny, I thought it was Houston Alaska for a moment hehehe ). I was thinking the muck we drive in was a part of it - tho' I am surprised the Canadians don't run them as well, then. I see lots of Canadian terrain looking like the peat bogs we have a bit farther north ( I am saying BC and Ontario are southern, hehehe).
Look like quads? Heck, most of the trails up here are made by "four-wheelers" (the usual name for quads locally) so I have to try to keep up with 'em. My Zuk is about as big as you can get and still fit down the trails they make - if even then.
Comparison.....the Polarais 6x6 Ranger/or a Zuk with Terras....Hmmmmm
here is one from Alto, TX......
Pappa Smurf 09-26-2002, 06:43 PM those r not frickin tractor tires can we say paddle tires not tractor tires but what ever i like tire for rock crawling what ever float ur boat
one:question: is'nt this a rock crawler bored or am i on crak or some thing

lol, us mudders are taking over the board. One by one. :flipoff2:
Most of us try to wheel in the rocks when ever possible, but usually have to settle for badly washed out dirt trails.

[lightly bashing sammy guys] the 3 sammy guys wouldnt even attempt this one [/lightly bashing sammy guys] :flipoff2:
Too bad some of the tricked out sammys on this forum are all in the states. Would love to watch them walk right through that wash. (Claimed my 60)
Brook (dont hate me. I wish I built a sammy instead)
Pappa Smurf 09-26-2002, 08:29 PM thats not nuthin but both the rigs look awsome tho:p

:flipoff2: that wash is deeper than a sammy is long :flipoff2:
btw, those are tires are 44.6" tall, and make a 44" swamper look short. :p
Brook
Pappa Smurf 09-26-2002, 08:46 PM i could go across that on tricycle
:p
Let me guess, the one sammi next to your terra tires has 31x15.50-15's???
They are put on the 3 wheeled skid loaders that are typically on the back of lowes trucks/brick trucks, and other flatbeds with self propelled loaders... They are junk, hard rubber, stiff sidewalls :-P
bgreen 09-26-2002, 09:02 PM ya, some have heavier ply ratings than others, but they are not that bad around 2-3 psi. On the rocks the arent very cool, that is for sure. I grooved mine so that the would bite better on the rocks, but would rather have some 44" swampers grooved for the rocks. I had some, but sold them so I could afford to lower the compression on my Cad. :crybaby2:

Eh, no. Not the same thing. Well, maybe Doug's are that type. I was checking some on lift truck awhile back. Mine are relativly light duty.
http://home.gci.net/~ddesigns/snowtest.html
Guess I really do need that star.
See the pics of the flex - note that is in really cold weather, still pretty good. With the beads screwed on, I can pull the valve cores entirely - floats on snow pretty good. I am thinking of going to tracks tho' - a snow cat would be pretty fun up here ( looong winters, y'know ).
Anyway, they might be "junk" on slick-rock. Could you ship a bunch up here for me to try so we can know for sure?
I only see clay, peat, gravel, mud, slurry, swamp, and muck, and other forms of Terra Firma mixed with water until not too Firma.
Is this really a rock crawl only board? I just thought that rocks were dominating the 4x4 scene (like in all the magizines). That and there isn't a lot of tech to putting on big tires, just a lot of fun to be had using them.
Erik Dossett 09-26-2002, 11:45 PM Hank, how do you like those sand tires? I know they do come in v-tread too, so they can count as tractor tire with me - I considered them , but was concerned about carcass durability - would they get punctured by sharp rocks/ branches/ stumps, etc. Can't you get them in a 32 -33?
I dont have them on my rig, I have swampers. Just got the pic in Alto. I just saw this guy rippin it up and having a blast.

This board is mainly rocks due to it's west coast origins. I think there is a lot of tech that goes into fitting big tires on a rig, especially if there good traction on the local trails. Tire clearances, suspension issues, not to mention making sure the axles/steering/gearing will allow you to reliabley traverse the local terrain. On some of the trails down here we will spend 12 hours to go a half a mile to do one major obstacle. You don't want to find your weak link on hour 12 :D

Erik Dossett 09-27-2002, 09:19 AM That's sorta' what I meant - to make big tires really work well, and the driveline really hold up, takes more tech for rocky, high traction terrain than usually (not always) found on the muddy end of the field, so to speak. Not that the mud doesn't break things.
Speakin' of big tires - not to tease there Rich - but this Rockwell/HUGE tractor tire setup was considered for a Samurai - would be the biggest I have heard of EVER if done hehehe I think he would have had to add 4 feet to the frame just to keep the wheels apart hehehe.
http://www.pbase.com/image/5224722
his wife reports that he was concerned frame would bend before the tires would slip hehe.
Erik
Erik Dossett 09-27-2002, 09:41 AM more to the point - most of the rock tech transfers to the mud guys to fit the tires, but the tires that work in mud aren't always the best for rocks - but this thread wouldn't have over 300 views if it didn't at least keep you guys entertained.:flipoff2: ;)

I had something kinda like 350Samurai's rig in mind, but the more parts I collected (57" rice and cane tires, rockwells, 350/SM465/205, air bags), the more concerned I was that the truck would twist before it would lift a tire. It is still tempting to start building.....22" of clearance under the diff (before shaving). I was also concerned that a zuk would crush like a beer can if it rolled hard. The more I thought about it, the closer it was to becoming a 10,000 lb zuk (lots of serious cage/frame reinforcements)

I liked the pictures...... That's all the muddin I need :D
Flipper 09-27-2002, 05:50 PM If you don't mind replacing brakes every week and wheel bearings once a month....and damn near all of the electrical wiring every two years......mud is great.
When I lived in Memphis, we would go play in the mud all night long on Friday and Saturday nights. It was about the most fun I have ever had. I was locked front and rear, so I never had to use momentum to get through the holes. The worst thing you could do was lay it over on it's side (no mountains to roll down).
That is why I ended up with such serious mud tires (5" tall lugs)

one of the arca dude who lives here found it
it is about twenty mile west of pheonix AZ:p
bgreen 09-28-2002, 12:52 PM Is that as steep as it looks? If so, its going on my list of MUST GO HERE's

there are more picture and the last water fall in the didstance behind the farest guy is 60 to 65 foot at an 85 degree angle
road1will 09-28-2002, 01:36 PM those rigs look sweet!
but i think that tractor tires are not where its at for rocks, they are too stiff and dont have enough grip.

I agree that they are not the best selection for the rocks, but I wouldnt say they dont grip...

If we did more rocks up here I would definately trade the tractor tires for a set of Boggers or Swampers
Brook
Pappa Smurf 09-28-2002, 03:11 PM the only thing there i wouln'nt say was trade for bogger there the same as tractor ties but boggers are:rainbow:

Samy with 9" of lift and 31's vs, 45" terra tire
Erik Dossett 09-29-2002, 11:55 PM hehehe the 31's look like Rice Boy 17s next to them REAL tractor tires. Maybe someone SHOULD build the 10000 lb Zuk with the 57's.
Erik
I need to get out soon and get some pics to show you guys what the Terras are on my rig for - bottomless peat bogs. Da' SWAMP!!
Erik Dossett 09-30-2002, 02:35 PM This is the biggest truck I have seen as a personally owned/actually USED to go places machine. Well, I have seen a similar rig just a bit bigger, but it used a center articulating joint instead of steering the front wheels, so not so much of a truck.
http://www.pbase.com/image/5350064/large
Makes the 56" tractor tires seem a bit wimpy hehehe.
Pappa Smurf 09-30-2002, 03:50 PM looks like a motor home on crack
What is it
Erik Dossett 09-30-2002, 11:37 PM Rolligon tires ( rolligon is a type/brand of oil exploration rig) and Rockwell axles - the idea is to cross ANY terrain in the pursuit of moose/bear/caribou. Raging rivers, DEEP peat bogs, endless tundra, all conquered with low ground pressure (tread lightly) and all the comforts of home. I do want to look more into this one, it is the biggest home build I have seen. I think the bottom of the driver's door is over 8 feet up. Kind of an extreme version of what you can drive in really big country. Similar size rigs are used in Churchill, Canada to take pictures of polar bears - school buses on the giant tires, whole camps set up way off the ground to view the bears.
Erik
and yea, the buggy is kind of motorhome, but on steroids more then crack. Not mine, and I don't know the owner, but I would love a pic of my tiny little monster in front of that beast - total opposites ends of the off road spectrum.
