From Cougar Buttes drive exactly 20 miles NN/E on Power Line Road from the intersection of Granite turn west and go about 2-3 miles. Find a short fence and park. Walk about ¼ mile N to the sign below.

It’s a long drive but you can run most of it at about 55-60mph. Pretty cool place for in the middle of nowhere.

Speaking of Giant Rock, and Rock Climbing...
Here is an old climbing topo map/list of some quality climbs located a few hundred yards to the west/northwest of Giant Rock. These climbs are on the west facing wall in the sandy cove known as the DMZ:

If I can dig up some old photos, I'll scan and post'em....

so how do you get to the finger?

34° 35.083'N
116° 48.770'W

It's 5.75 miles north (Heading 5.61 Degrees North) as a crow flies from Granite Road where it crosses the Power Lines (Just north of Cougar Buttes Camping area).

Head out Camp Rock Rd north a few miles, then follow a series of westerly trails till you see it.

Does anyone have close up pictures of the mine in the area by Wrecking Ball? I noticed it from the top of Jack looking down toward Wrecking Ball.

It's been awhile but at one time you could see the fault on Fissure Mountain. This fault or fissure was caused during the Landers quake in the 90's that pretty much transformed established canyon trails into rock crawling trails.

There's also a steel door that's embedding into rock that houses a seismic testing room. It was placed there by a local university who's name escapes me. I don't recall where it is exactly but I believe it's over by aftershock.

Perhaps someone can confirm if these "cool things to see" are still there since I haven’t seen them since like 1994 :shaking:

The steel door is on the Los Padres Mine (34° 23.295'N, 116° 24.693'W). It is quite a distance south of Aftershock. KOH 2009 race course ran right past it.

I haven't seen the old paved roads, but have seen the old paved target circles. They used to drop water bombs for target practice.

There's the UFO welcome Center. It's South West of Pilot Rock, I believe. It wasn't open when we were there but it might be when you go.

There might be another tank in that same area along with a few pop-up dummy targets. There also might be two more behind a berm on the other side of that hill. Or at least that is what I have been told :D:laughing:

And they plowed over the steel door. There is still a few other mines on the hill but I am pissed that the closed that one before I got to it.

Near that mine location there is a fire Hydrant cemented to some rocks on top of a small sand hill.

Guess I have something to look for on google earth now, if it is east it must be on the base unless it is WAY east

http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=34.636664,-116.98895&spn=0.003518,0.005665&z=18

This is off of Barstow Rd...Hwy 247

Edit: And yet another:
http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=34.352551,-116.277092&spn=0.003525,0.005665&z=18
This one is most likely on the base. It's northeast of Giant Rock.

An interesting observation after seeing all 9 target circles is that the most west circle is just west of Barstow Rd (Hwy 247), and the farthest east target is east of Giant Rock. Then looking at all nine, they are laid out in almost a perfect zigzag patten about 7 miles apart from one another. I'll see if I can't post a pic with all 9 shown. Also, at the farthest east direction at about the same 7 mile distance is an Airbase.

These old target circles were used for World War II Bombing Exercises. We've found pieces of what looks to be water-bombs scattered amongst the asphalt circles. The circles are about 100 yards in diameter.

I noticed that zig-zag pattern and the equal distances too, that is how I found some of the others, once I found the one by aftershock I noticed that the distance from that one to means was about half the distance from means to soggy so I started looking in between and found the one at melville. Next I started looking the same distance north east and found the one at anderson. I looked over towards lucern but not where you found it because it is in town, I quess the town was not there back then.

I had also seen the one you labeled #7 but it is just a circle and not a target so I was not sure if it was part of the same series. #8 seems to be placed correctly to maintain the zig-zag and equal distance of the rest of the pattern. Man you have good eyes, it took me a while to find #9 even with your map but I can barely make out the target so I think you are right.

Not much of a science guy.. But one thing that always intrigued me is how certain landscapes where made up. Learned about it a little in high school Geology, and then a lot in college.

Just went to JV for the first time, and I wasn't able to come up with how everything was formed... It's been a awhile but did the Glaciers make it down that far?

Any good geological sites out there about how JV/the hammers was created?

Giant Rock used to be hollowed out and there was a sleeping area, kitchen, table and bench all carved out by hand. I slept in it when I was a kid.

North east of GR is definately part of the base. Even leaving Landers ad going a little too far north will bring the black helicopters, (little white twin engine bat 21 planes.)

My kids and I were chased off a year or two ago on our scooters.
