Some crazy ass lady in an accord decided she needed to get infront of me in a real hurry and cut me off...
i slammed on the brakes and pulled hrd to the right...avoided a collision but jeep started to feel weird.
gradually it became more and more noticeable, my jeep was pulling to the left while driving and to the right while braking...
thought maybe i bent the tierob or something cuz the front end dipped quite a bit when i hit the brakes.
after a quick inspection everything looked okay.
drove 10 more minutes and the jeep started to shake pretty good. When it got real scary i pulled over again and had anohter look.
smoking and crackling coming from the front left caliper.
so its binding but not working obviously.

lots of fluid, just put new lines in a while back but haven't changed the pads in a bit...
any ideas?

It's a YJ with a d30 front.

thanks

Those calipers on the D30 are prone to fail. The easiest, cheapest and quickest fix is to simply replace the caliper. I messed around with one of mine for a couple weeks replacing the seals, cleaning everything spotless.... you name it. The problem would go away for a couple days at the most. Just replace it and save yourself a headache.

thanks for the reply bro
gonna replace the whole thing tomorrow

Just wondering if that's even it now though...
jacked up the front end to make sure the bearings and shizz were okay and the tire is now spinning freely

That sounds the same as what was happening with my brakes. As soon as they cooled down everything moved freely.

A few months ago I was stuck alongside the road waiting for the brakes to cool down. I had to take a tire iron and push the brake cylinder back into the caliper to get the wheel. Then I avoided using the brakes as much as possible to get home. You would be amazed how far you can travel without touching the brake pedal. Just some creative downshifting and some careful planning was all it took.

Had another incident with a faulty caliper on the trail about a year ago. After the third or fourth time it locked up I just removed the caliper and zip tied a 2x4 and a piece of plate steel in between the pads to keep the cylinder from popping out. The caliper was tied up to the frame and out of the way. The Jeep had a heck of a pull to the left but it got me off the trail before dark.

well, after i replaced the calipers and pads we noticed the front drivers side disc was a little warped...the rotor would turn smooth to a point then be real hard to turn then turn smooth again.

went back and bought new rotors and redid the brakes again.

i think it was a combo of a warped rotor, shotty caliper with almost no brake pads...
what caused what i don't know.

i mean, the axle was just swapped in a few months ago and i didn't take any care or pay attention to the brakes when i did it. I just assumed everything was fine.
It was bound to cause problems sooner or later.

anyways
thanks for the help
