looking for advice on 5.29 gears. My montero (monty) has a mits 9" rear. Also need advise on the transfer case type and where can i get the above aswell as the transfer case 2.85 gear swap.

IMO 5.29s aren't worth it unless you live oversea It'll cost you about $600 per axle plus installation. You could save money by buying just the front 5.29 gears and building a 5.29 rear from a cheaper toyota axle and swap rear axles, possibly saving hundreds However, the 2.85 gears I hear are well worth the money if you do alot of techinal wheeling those are about $1200 or something. About mid-range in relation to t-case gears throughout the market for other vehicles. OR you could swap in a NP231 from a jeep XJ cherokee for alot less plus they have a stock 2.72:1 low and 4:1 aftermarket available. Could be alot more in-depth work but those you have done it say they would go with the jeep swap everytime over again. Heck you could even get a np231 crawl box with a dana 300 twin stick and really be king shit...

Need to know a few things, what gears do you currently have, Current tire size, future tire size, engine size, and manual or automatic tranny.

The tcase gears can be had from Marks4wd.com out of Australia but the make different kits so getting the right set of gears for your tcase is critical.

TY for the response, Monty has 3.0 v6, auto trans, 31" tires, 1St gear is 3.918 transfer has 1.925 and the diff has 4.64's. want to go to 36" tire supported by ( three link rear and SAS 4" springs front) in progress as we speak.

Unless you're building and rockcrawler rig you should be fine with 36s on the stock IFS. But SAS is always a good thing so cheers to you:grinpimp:

IMO I wouldn't use the rear axle if you plan to run 5.29s. You could spend easily over a grand on gears just the rear axle alone. Where you could find a 5.29 toyota for much less already built. What are your plans for SAS axles? I assume toyota since you need 5.29s?

my need for gears is not set for 5.29's it's just the only after market gear set i found on monteros. i am considering going to either 44's or toy axles still looking for which would be most compatible with least work. i'm not afraid of tweaking or swaps. got plasma and welder:mr-t: and yes on the rock crawler. fordyce ready Rubicon to start

Wow awesome. Then the np231 crawlbox and dana 300 twinstick is right up your alley :)
Well you may have noticed that the mitsu is driver drop, toyotas are passenger drop, BUT dana 300s come stock as a passenger drop (or drivers with a flip kit) so a np231 crawl box and dana 300 you could run toyota axles.
Twinstick will be awesome on the rocks!
Tcase ratios with np231 crawlbox to dana 300 stock gears in both(4:1 gears availble for both)
1:1 high/high
2.72:1 low/high
2.62:1 high/low
7.13:1 low/low
plus 3.918 1st and 5.29 gears, 147.7:1 low

As far as 36s go with the twin stick should should alright with a set of longfield axles (don't forget to truss the front axle alot reference the 79-95 toyota section for ideas/pics) Actually you might be better off buying a used set of built toyota axles in California already with 5.29s:grinpimp:
36s should fit good with 4" lift. I have no idea about the flex clearance though but that all depends on suspension setup. What springs are you planning?

5.29s are also the equivalent of 32s compared to 28s on stock 4.625s. You should have NO problem going 75mph with 36s. I'm actually planning to run 35-38.5s with 4.90 gears with my 2.6 4 banger, I should be able to go 75mph. I guy I know can go 70 with 35s on stock 4.625s with a 2.6L

Man, that's a low crawl ratio. Mine is 102:1 and I think that is over kill.

1st gear.......... 3.967

Crawl Ratio...... 102:1


The 231/300 twin stick would be cool but with an Auto Tranny it seems like it would be overkill. Typically you don't need as low of a crawl ratio with an Auto tranny.

Doh! I was thinking LWB/4 door the whole time...you'll have trouble with a SWB/2 door.

My Sport has the NP231/Dana300 and with my 30-43LE(AW4) it is 1" shorter than the stock t-case/V4A51 trans.

Love the ability to control each axle with the twin sticks. Some day I'll get the 4:1 gears for the Dana 300, but for now the 7:1 is plenty of gear for the trails I hit. In 4th gear and low-low at 2000rpm I'm going 5mph.

Here's my final ratio
1st - 2.804
231 - 2.72
300 - 2.62
axle - 4.89(4.88fr-4.90rr)
= 97.71:1
