: any good 12V electric motors?
GRMhick 09-25-2002, 08:15 PM I was looking at putting a york in my ram, but with the mounting, and other BS, it would be easier to just mount it with it's own 12V motor. I looked at the oasis one, and i like the idea, but i am not spending $600 for a york. so my question is, what could i use for a 12 volt motor, that would work the york, and is, well, cheap. I woudl perfer something i could get at pick and pull.
thanks
Garrett
How about a starter/winch motor, should be able to convert it to the style of the oasis..for a lot less. I was thinking of doing that on the side for a portable setup....
Black Dog 09-26-2002, 06:44 AM I would also look at a starter motor. I have thought about this in the past also.
usmcdoc14 09-26-2002, 07:18 AM i have been playing with this idea for a few months and this was before i saw the oasis unit. ($600!!! )
starter motors fry quickly (small fire)
i am looking at diffrent 12v motors to work it and will post my results when they come up.
trying to do this for under $150
Sundowner 09-26-2002, 07:21 AM do a search, this topic has been covered recently.
you need a motor with a 100% duty cycle or very close to it.
Rockit 09-26-2002, 07:22 AM I believe the Oasis uses a motor that if for a snowplow to provide power to the hydro. I think Northern sells them.
GRMhick 09-29-2002, 10:09 AM got any links to some of these motors? I dont really like the idea of the starter motor. I looked at northern tool website and didnt see any 12v motors, but then, i didnt look too hard. Plus, i woudl rather get a junkyard motor. My orignal idea was a fan motor, but i know it wasent designed to take a hard load like that. Any other ideas?
larryboy 09-29-2002, 11:35 AM if you have the room why not a little briggs 2hp. build a tray to hold the eng. and comp. with a handle and its portable too.
i'm going this route myself, havn't hammered out the details but its been floating around in my head for awhile. my .02

That is a damn sweet idea. I work for a mower shop that Sears runs, so I have not shortage of small engines or parts. I got about 15 mowers lying around right now I can take engines off of.
So would you use a horizontal or vertical engine? If you could do vertical like a mower, you would have no problem getting engines for almost or completely free.
I thought about using a mower engine on a winch too, but not really far into the idea.
redrangie 09-29-2002, 07:17 PM What about a weed eater or blower motor? Smaller than a 2hp, but do they have enough umph to turn a compressor?

On_The_Rocks 09-29-2002, 07:46 PM if you have the room for a lawn mower engine than why use that, just get a generator so you have 110v and then get a compressor and a 110v motor and some pullies.
larryboy 09-30-2002, 04:48 PM a weedeater motor has the power but i think you would be turning too many revs.
a vertical shaft eng could work, would take some thinking to get it to mount up to a horz. shaft compressor. i've seen mowers with a vertical shaft that twist the belt using idler pulleys to end up running a horiz. accessory. possible but would take more room.
there is already a briggs powered hyd. winch out there.milemarker was advertising one.(didn't see it on their webite though).
generator would be a good route also....but when you have access to cheap or free small engines you go with what you got:) .
GRMhick 09-30-2002, 08:38 PM i have thought about the gas motors too.. but too bulky, and electric woudl work better for my application... any other ideas?
larryboy 10-01-2002, 04:18 PM what about one of those electric motors that drag racers use to run their water pump?
heres one;http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=2320
