this is a steel T15 bumper on a T-100 with a warn XD9000. this was the result of winching a tacoma up a hill.

bent passenger side bracket

crack on passenger side bracket at the top of about 3/4". this is right in a bend and the other side is about to start if i winch again.

TJM (total junk makers) is not known for great quality down here

should have gone ARB or custom :(

ARB does not make a bumper for the T100 as it was never imported down under. if i can get my cash back instead of a replacement, i will go custom. if they replace it, i will have to gusset the piss out of it to make it worth using.

I had *heard* that TJM has a support brace that's supposed to be used with the bumpers if a winch is going to be used..

I agree though.. I have 2 friends with Tacoma's.. one has an ARB bumper, one has a T-17.. the T-17 moves MUCH more than the ARB...

they told me that the brace was only necessary for the aluminum bumpers. that was from mark mckeever - the US rep.

FYI - here in the US the ARB bumpers are NOT build better than the TJM. I have owned a TJM and compared it side by side to ARB bumpers and was not impressed with any major sifferences in strength.

I had more than a few hard winch pulls with my TJM bumper and never once noticed any movement.

Of course - every vehicle has different mounting setup and attachment points - so the TJM on my 90 Toy likely is not the same as the one on your T100.

I probably bent because you left 4 vital bolts off.

http://fastq.com/~sschaefer/tjm005.jpg

The 4 on the end of the frame rails. Surly if the shiny new truck boy can fab this up you old junkers can as well.

6 bolts per frame rail on 3 sides.

Don't let the shiny paint job blind you.

very nice addition. obviously not part of what TJM says to do, but that would help solve things in addition to teh winch brace being obviously needed on steel bumpers as well as aluminum ones. i surely was not going to plunk down another $100 for the winch brace if the head guy for TJM in the US tells me i do not need to. where did you originally get the plan to cap teh end of the frame and add those bolts? did you tack weld the nuts behind that cover? your frame is talled than wide there, while mine is wider versus tall. alos, my brackets only covers about 40% of the frame opening to be able to do that. custom no matter what. they make our brackets two pieces as well which adds more problems.

Geez Scott, I didn't know you bent your bumper during that winch. He shouldn't have been on that trail to start with in my opinion, but that's another topic. Sorry to hear about your bumper bro.

Wow, glad I went with the ARB. I have to rework the mounts for it big time after the SAS is done. Should be interesting to see what I come up with because the spring hangers are getting in the way big time...

Ive seen ARBs do the same thing! They are all made like shit. Build your own. That is the only way to go.:D

It looks like there really isn't a good winch platform available commercially. I just clicked the Rockstomper site. They appearantly no longer make winch bumpers for normal customers like you and I. I wonder why...

For the cost of a TJM you can buy a nice welder and some nice flat stock to make something much stronger.

To anyone who is thinking about making a bumper for winching I say this... If you think its too much its probably not enough. Gusset your brackets, brace your gussets, bracket your braces, then weld a bunch more reinforcement in just for good measure.

i remember a thread where rockstompers brackets were bending forward and down teh same way. i am not sure where i saw that thread. maybe that is why scott quit. he also quit listing sliders, skid plates for IFS and some other stuff. oh well.

Hi Surlynkid, I found this thread while searching about winch bumpers and it has been while now and I wanted to know if TMJ did anything to make this right for you ? If not, what are you using now?:p

Yes thanks, I got it. Hope they take of you on that. The two tjm outlets I've talked to say the same thing about the extra brace being only for the aluminum bumper.;)
