: Duece-and-a-half???
I'm sitting here pondering various things, among them my serious lust for a 2 1/2 ton 6x6 and it occured to me how fawkin sweet a duece would be with a BBC and a Gear Vendors overdrive. Could just pull the Jeep up on the flatbed and hit the road. Anyone seen anything like this done? Is it even possible? I don't know much about the 2 1/2 tons.
Sundowner 09-26-2002, 09:16 AM why waster your time?
you can get 2.5 tons with barely used turbo diesels for less than you'd think. there's a guy in S Jersey (joeyoung.com?) who sells them.
I WANT ONE.
but Mrs. Sundowner keeps asking me where I'd park something that big.
I keep arguing that I could park it anywhere I want, cause who the hell could tow it?
:D
gunracer1 09-26-2002, 09:47 AM i have some, but i have to tell you i have thought about the same thing. they are really loud as in is says to wear ear protection while operating. but it is cool as hell to drive around. they steer better than you would think for not having power steering. they leak wind and rain in the cab. i would not recommend one for a daily driver unless you drive a very short distance. i have one i am keeping for myself that is a winch truck with a hard top. i just think it will be cool a hell to haul my 23 ft. ski boat to the lake with kids all piled in the bed, i think it will get some looks. i am going to put antique tags on mine, so it cheap as hell to get tags. i have more if you are intrested. just p.m. me. or give me a call 817-819-0268. mike
Daniel, BBC=Big Block Chevrolet. What you described is pretty much along the lines of what I was thinkning as far as making it more road friendly. What tranny would work?
gunracer1 09-26-2002, 09:51 AM any tranny, they have a divorced t case.
gunracer1 09-26-2002, 09:59 AM yea i keep thinking the same thing, i have a 92 dodge with a cummins and a auto o.d. that would fit real easy. i can get another for 2k with 110k on it. it would be pretty sweet. crank the pump up, change the ex side of the turbo and wala 220hp and over 500 fpt. mike
gunracer1 09-26-2002, 10:00 AM that is for the whole truck, it has been rolled. mike
bad booger 09-26-2002, 10:03 AM you guys are friggin nuts.
I want one

is it 4x4? I'll split the cost of it with you for the axles. ;) seriously,, drop me a PM.
DAMN YOU DANIEL... beat me to it.. lol.... One of you PM me.:flipoff2:
bad booger 09-26-2002, 10:10 AM If you wanted to make a trail truck out of one would you have to regear the axels? They come with some big tires on them, so I figure you wouldn't.
gunracer1 09-26-2002, 10:21 AM you cant really regear the axles, no one make another ratio that i know of. you could put another t case in front of the exsisting case for a doubler. i think a divorced 205 would fit. mike
gunracer1 09-26-2002, 10:23 AM danial has dibs on the truck, and its 2wd. mike
GO 4LO 09-26-2002, 10:31 AM Anybody have the specs on the stock turbodiesels for the 2.5-tons?
Chris
madmarx 09-26-2002, 11:01 AM I think a Duece is SCREAMING for hydro or hydro assist steering. Get a box off a dump truck or something similar and send it to lakerat to get setup...:D
Junkyard Slug 09-26-2002, 11:54 AM Hey Daniel, what size are those big tires in the pic you posted?
JYS
gunracer1 09-26-2002, 11:56 AM i wouldn't recomend them in the rocks, but i was suprised how it turned. i mean it's not as bad as my old ford pick up. mike
what kind of license is necessary for those things sounds like a sweet idea gotta love being different

Hate to rain on anyone's parade but a big block Chevy would make a deuce into a real slug. Try a bombed "C" series Cummins with 1000 ft-lb at 1200 rpm. And forget the Gear Vendors OD, this is a HEAVY truck. Think instead about a Road Ranger behind a big diesel, with an additional Brownie if you want even more overdrive.
And forget the car automatics like a 727 or TH350/400. They'll melt in no time.
These are NOT lite trucks, gotta change mindset.

gunracer1 09-26-2002, 02:11 PM they weigh in right at 13k, hell i have my dodge dually loaded heavier than that all the time. in texas a regular license is all you need to drive one for personal use. mike
redrangie 09-26-2002, 02:24 PM You're all nuts.
I had to drive those damn things a lot while I was in the service. Although you have a superior driving position, (higher than hell) I can't think of too many reasons to WANT to drive one as a DD.
They leak WORSE than a Defender, are noisier than hell (earplugs will be required at speed, period), most REQUIRE double clutching, can be beat a stop light drag by a diesel rabbit, have pads for seats, and have horrible lighting, (well the cat-eye night convoy lights are cool) etc, etc, etc.
However, I will say this. Being able to drive over that honda that boxed you in a parking space does have it's advantages.

That's why I asked. But answer me this: How would a healthy big block putting out far more power than the stock engine make it a slug. I know this thing isn't going to go fast no matter what's in it. Also, no doubt a big diesel would rule in one of these thats just a little beyond my means.
gunracer1 09-26-2002, 05:09 PM hey i have about five with turbos that run like a champ. if you want to check one out give me a call and stop by and give one a test ride. the stock motor is no drag race winner but it does get the truck from place to place just fine. it may be slow, as in 58 to 63mph but it works and it seems to do just as well loaded down. mike
Mike I would love to do that, but I'm stuck out in Nacogdoches for school and I have cross-county races or workouts every weekend so free time is pretty much nill. At this point I don't have the money to do much of anything, just kicking ideas around.
bgreen 09-26-2002, 08:29 PM Daniel: these guys got it all wrong... BBC = Big Bad Caddy :D

gunracer1 10-28-2002, 07:12 AM i sold my personal winch truck yesterday, and the guy drove it 200 miles home. he ran 55 to 60 the whole way. he burned half a tank of fuel as in 7 to 8 mpg. i did loan him a set of mickey mouse ear muffs though. mike
Toddy 10-28-2002, 09:00 AM I think a 3208 Cat and 5 speed Allison auto would be the set up. Do I have a deal for you, I happen to have a truck with that set up for sale. Man makes me wish I would have been at the sale where the old duece went for 300. Well prob would have been something else I would have not finished.
