Np231 I heard is a bolt up. You'll want to find one with a long input shaft to fit the mitsu tranny. Depending on the length of the input, you either cut the shaft or machine a spacer .

Edit: I was wrong.

The 231 will only bolt to the Aisin-Warner trans through a xj tail housing. It's got to be a 6cyl(23spline)xj and long shaft(96-01 I think). You'll need the tailshaft sensor and sensor wheel from the jeep AW4.

I would like to see a more thourogh explaination of this tcase conversion with lots of pics. If the the 231 bolts up then it stands to reason that the NP241OR bolts up as well which would be awsome.

you want the short shaft, I've done this swap on a gen1 and it's way easy, and i've started one on the gen 2 and it's not so bad.

Sorry, I meant to say short shaft, it's still the 96-01's that have the case that works. I linked one to the 99 Sport trans(Aisin30-43le) that's in my 01 Sport, and actually I flipped it to clear the flipped Dana300 that's behind my 231. Just had to drill 2 holes in the jeep tail housing to allow it to bolt on upside-down.

you can just slap it on a gen 1 head over to napa and get a new oil seal for the adapter to t\case adapt the speedo new drive shafts. YOu'll need to also make a bracket for the shifter to work or go with a cable style shifter for your tranny. also the t\case shifter will need to also be addressed. that should give you an idea
