If you want to night hunt, a nv scope or binocs are worthless if you are not using a rifle scope.
Using the NV with a traditional scope kills your night (dark) vision when switching from the NV device to the naked eye.
gen 1 is junk, gen 2 is ok and gen 3 is good if you have the budget, imo.

I run a latest gen PVS-14 on most of my guns :flipoff2: you just need the right optic and mount. more on this in a bit.

Gen1 = bulky/oldgrainy as fuck/cheap
gen2 = better but still "old" by standard, "ok" resolution usually not autogated and can not be used in daylight without shutdown or death, best for those not wanting to drop serious cash, used with an IR illuminator makes it better
GEN3 = sorta latest gen, good res, good intensifying, works in rear IR and visual so it picks up a LOT, prepair to throw cash , ....whatever I would need to know to make a purchase.buy from a reputable source do NOT buy from a random Ebay fucker or some place you do not know without INSPECTING AND RUNNING THE OPTIC !! people have been fucked bad. Make sure the place has a return policy as what they say is "acceptable back specs and dark spots" may not be yours .. also if concerning a scope and not just goggles how do you sight it in...depth preception, 1 lens or 2, monocular, binocular, handsfree, visual distances able to be aquired etc
I use a monocular, binos are worthless unless you are driving or need depth perception. depth perception is like watching a TV screen, it takes getting used to it. Depth of field (what is in focus) is controlled by you but can be cheated in brighter light by using a "daylight" cover or making a small hole dead center in a regular cover. it creates a "pinhole camera" effect and allows a HUGE depth of field and also cuts on glare and splash.
I run my monocular with both factory and custom mounts to run BEHIND my optics. Some like EOTechs/aimponts/elcans have "NVG" settings to just give enough dot without flare. With scopes or other magnified optics it takes some play to figure out the correct NVG-scope relief to get a good sight picture.
If you do choose this route it is bets to sight in the weapon again AT NIGHT because sometimes there is a POI change.
can they be used during daytime
some, not all. Mine is daytime safe but I would not run it a lot as it can create "dark spots" from the bright light on the recifier tube even in the most current gen optics. running a daylight cover or a hole in a cover like I said before makes them all "day time safe"
can goggles be used with halographic sights, typical daytime scopes (leupold, nikon etc)covered that
