Damn those look skinny but so did the 40's we put on mine, I like it though:D Have you wheeled this rig yet

Sweeet :D Can you get more pics? I want to run the 38.5x11s too, but I have no idea how much I would have to cut with 5" lift...I don't mind cutting just as long as I can keep the inner fenders so I can keep stuff under the hood.
Do they rub the frame when steering?

I'm still quite a ways away from wheeling it like that, I just put the tires on yesterday to see if everything fits. There's not a lot of raider left under there, it's riding on an EB dana 44 with extended radius arms and 4" TJ coils, and under the hood is a multi-port 5.2 magnum. The tires clear everything though, not sure how long ifs would hold up to them though.

With a V8 and those tires I doubt the IFS axles will survive very long. I kept snapping mine like toothpicks. The Mitsubishi rear held up though.

Baldy, how big of tires were you running when you were snapping the CV axles? I never had any issues running 33's at Moab but then again I only had a 4cyl diesel. I think 33-35's are about max on the 7.25" IFS.

I love the look of this rig. This thing is soooo cool looking. Man I want to do another project.

I will be running 38.5x11 using V6 8" front with any cheap 4.88 rear I can get and a stock 2.6l and a 38mm weber. No V8 for me...

fattony is running an EB D44 front with a V8 though...:D

As much as I don't want to see you break your rig, I recommend you carry extra cv axles when you go wheeling cause I think you're going to need them.

I think we need some more pictures of the Raider on 38.5s Boggers. I am going to stop at Q78 TSLs as long as I still have the stock suspension etc.:smokin:

We will see...I won't be carrying any until I break one. That is, IF I break one. Its not a d30:flipoff2:

Yeah me too...need a side pic too see how they fit at that height. I'm most worried about the front part of the back wheelwell, If I push the axle back 2" they should fit great:grinpimp:

After swapping in the Chevy 350 I was doing Ok until I went to 33" swampers, then I started breaking CV axles. I even ripped an upper A frame off it's mount, that was the last straw and I swapped in a dana 44. I do wheel it pretty hard though.

its been some time since he posted in this thread so....

I am helping him with this project and I feel confident that the d44 will be ok under this.

I run those same tires on my Bronco 2 Truggy thing, it weighed in at about 4200 lbs with a 300+ hp 4.0 C5, and doubler into a waggy dana 44 with superiors and a detroit locker, thrashed the shit outta the thing, high RPM rock bouncing in low and double low, jumping it over 3' in the air and more without breaking an axle.

this raider is getting there now, moved to the rear where a set of 63" chevy's will be replacing the stock springs, and moving the rear end about 4' or so back.

I will tell him to post some updated pics tomorrow.

I get that much flex out of my stock IFS :flipoff2:

Eh maybe not on second thot......... Everythings looking good to me but I dont know shit.

Are you gonna keep this thing streetable or trail rig only? If streetable I hope you enjoy them boggers

fattony
01-14-2010, 06:18 PM
Boggers are Sam's, Still deciding between Boggers and Rockers. Going to be streetable enough to drive to the trails and stuff, but it's definately not a daily driver. As for the 44 holding up, if it holds out until I can find some tonnes I'm happy.

Got the rear suspension done and lowered the front some, sits pretty nice now. Working on shock options now, as well as tossing arround fuel cell ideas. Have to relocate the fuel tank and filler because of the stretch, I think I'm going to make the left taillight flip out and having the filler neck behind it. Will hook up the stock filler neck release cable and spring load the hinge so the light pops open by itself. Would be pretty pimp.

Details on chevy 63 swap?
also how far back is the rear axle now? was it 4"(or 10cm for you canadians :flipoff2:) is planned?

also, got a pic of ride height?

fattony
02-01-2010, 04:08 PM
63" swap was pretty easy, we cut off the stock perches and the back 3 feet of frame and went from there. Not sure if I like them though, they stick out the back a lot. The rear axle is moved back 4", and the front ahead 1.5, for a 98" wheelbase. We lowered it about 2", On 38" tires I was able to do the plugs, wires, cap and rotor flat footed reaching over the fender. I'll get some pics of the ride height tonite. I'm still trying to figure out what to do for a fuel tank. The stock tank was all smashed so I scrapped it, I was hoping to run a fuel cell but no one seems to make a fuel cell that's designed to mount underneath the vehicle, and I don't want to have the fuel cell in an enclosed cab. Any ideas?

You can have the gas tank from my ram... it has the right fuel pump for your 318 and all.
It's all plastic so no rust.
Only problem is the tank is almost as long as your raider

if you want to lengthen the wheelbase a little more and get rid of some of your rear over hang you should turn the leaf spring around so the "short" side is facing backwards, its an old trick, but it works.

I thought about running them backwards, but I'm worried it will cause too much axle wrap. :flipoff2:

I have been thinking about running backwards 56" fords if I find the 63's hang out the back too far. The axle would stay in the same spot but the back would be 7" shorter. Sorry there haven't been any updates, been too busy to touch it the last couple weeks, but hopefully I'll get something done this week. I did hang a liberty grill on the front as a joke, we're calling it the Liberaider now. Don't think it's going to stay there though, enough people call it a jeep already.

Slowly getting little details cleaned up. Got the fuel tank and pump mounted and ran fuel lines, ran a positive battery cable, changed a bunch of bolts, etc. Got a 1310 flange for the rear diff. Still about a thousand little things to do before it's done but I'm picking away at them. One of these days I'll take some pics of some stuff.

After being on the back burner for a month or so the raider got some attention this week. bunch of late nights and some cash turned it into a billboard for my friends offroad shop at a local mud bogg. I hate mud, I'm going to be cleaning it for weeks, but it's a hell of a time lining up to a tree and giving it hell, especially having driven it about 800 yards total before the first full throttle run. Here's a vid of the first run, skip ahead to 45 seconds.

Worked pretty good again today. Pits were drier today so it was a lot faster. I had to race in the modified class because of my V8/SAS, so I was up against some serious hardware, the top 3 in the class all had $20,000 plus big blocks, but I still finished middle of the pack, only about a second back of the leaders. It was great advertising for my friend's business though, every time I looked over there were other competitors checking out our fab work. Most of the rigs there belonged on the scary steering page. One big block ford had like 3/8 or 7/16 heims on the panhard bar of it's tractor link 4 link front. made me laugh pretty hard.

Some guy in a diesel Paj stopped by today, got some shots of it next to the raider and took some measurements. Looks like I'm right at 6" total lift front and rear, measuring from the axle centerline to the fender lip. I definately have a bad case of Diesel envy now though.

Looks like I'm moving on to phase 2 of this build a little earlier than I'd planned. A combination of the low stance, the flipped D300, the EB dana 44 and the 46RH tranny made it necessary to run a 2 piece front driveshaft with a hanger bearing to get arround the trans. So far I've blown 2 front shafts. Admittedly they were not the best shafts but neither broke at a weld. Just seems to be the weak link. I've got a bunch of parts kicking arround anyway, so I think I'm going to flip the 300 back over and run a Chevy 3/4 ton 44 up front, and a Dodge 60 in the rear. I have pretty much everything, including gears to do the swap, I pretty much just need brakes all arround.

Here's where I'm stuck.

Should I cut the radius arm wedges off my ford 44 and weld them onto the Chevy, or should I modify my radius arms to be lower links and three link it? I made the radius arms stupidly long, so I could cut the ford ends off and still have at least 36" lower links, if not 38. I also have some 1.5" .250 wall DOM leftover from the steering that I could use as an upper link. (which brings up another question, is 1.5" .250 wall and 3/4" heims beef enouth for an upper link on a 3 link?)

Thoughts?

Raole Duke
07-25-2010, 09:31 AM
How bout a wristed radius arm on one side, and a y-link on the other. I definetly not re-use the wedges.

fattony

Did a whole bunch of measuring and talked it over with my welding/fab guy and decided that full width isn't going to happen at this ride height without frame mods. The pumpkin would be right under the frame leaving me aobut 1" of uptravel. We decided to try a beefier front driveline and wheel the crap out for a while, then chop the frame at the firewall and go FOA's and 1 tons.
