Guys, was quoted 1200 bucks for a TJ dana 44 in a junkyard. How does this price seem to you all. Anyone heading to Dixie Run coming up also??

What diff, what gears, are all the welds good, does it have brakes, are the shafts in good shape?

$1200 is about average, assuming you can just bolt in without any other requirements. I have seen cheaper, and I've seen more.

I bought my TJ D44 geared to 4.88s (open) for $1000, but that may be on the low end of the average.

Considering you don't hear of everyone and their brother finding one in a junkyard I would buy it if it's good shape. If you don't want it later, a TJ D44 is a piece of cake to sell it to the guys who didn't know better and bought a TJ with a 35.

fuck that shit. Way too much money for a D44. Get one from a mid 80s grand cherokee. It should be perfect width. Most likely a stocker will have 3.55 gears (I'm an XJ guy, this is my guess) and open. Get the axle kit from RE for about $300 and get someone to weld that crap on.

$1500 for a D44, $1200, BLAH!

I'm with SeanP here, but be sure you check the housing thoroughly for fractures. A friend of mine just found two XJ 44s at a local boneyard/ 4wd shop, but both were junked due to multiple stress fractures in the castings and tubes. The guy selling still wanted $300 per axle. :shaking:

Just be sure to go over it with a fine-toothed comb if you decide to go this way.
