I am in the process of getting my 35's installed on my jeep, and I am not a hardcore wheeler, but the only thing this jeep with be is just a fun trail rig. My question for all of you is, with the stock d30/d35, how well is my rig gonna do with the 35" tires? I know that I will be breaking axle shafts, but how much will it actually take to do such a thing?
thanks

I would absolutely not wheel a D35 with 35" tires.
What year is your xj? If it's 96 or below you are going to have the older 260 style shafts which aren't ideal for running 35's on a D30. Otherwise you will have the stronger 297 shafts, which should hold up fairly well with an open diff.

The 30 will hold ok with 35's... The D35 is in trouble.
What will it acctually take?? To break the 30 would mean you'd need to have the steering at full lock and romp it, or if your hooping and a wheel suddenly grabs, boom. Leave the diff open and it will survive much longer.
The 35 is just a shit axle all around. There more to worry about than just breaking a shaft when it comes the the rear. To break shafts, again a sudden tire hookup and your fugged, but also remember that the 35 is just a flat out small axle. The tubes are very small and very easy to bend or distort. Thus leaving you with a crooked axle making shaft replacement out of the question. Swap in an 8.8 for a couple hundo, leave the front open and you should be ok.

They interchange so this would be a cheap and easy upgrade if 260 is the case.

Also, early years if equipped with ABS came with 297's
I know this because my spare 93 shafts had tone rings and I popped 297's into them

Well before I wheel my 90' xj, I am going to put the 8.8 ford which I got from a friend under my jeep before I will wheel it very hard. I won't be able to afford gears for both my axles till next summer though so I am stuck where I am at till I have enough money. Thanks for all the input.
