: spool for the 8.4"???

I've searched here and on ttora. I've also talked to allpro, Randy's ring and pinion, and Front range. I'm hearing that spools for the 8.4" don't exist. I'm looking for one, and would rather not run a welded carrier (this is for a racing application where points are involved, so welding up the carrier is something we would rather not do). Has anyone taken a spool for a different application and cut it down, or machined it slightly to essentially make a spool for the 8.4" diff.? Could a spool from a crysler diff., or from a 9" be machined down to fit? We have a small machine shop at our disposal, so cutting one out of a solid chunk wouldn't really be possible, but machining an existing spool might work. What have others done to spool up one of these diffs?

Thanks.

they dont exist to my knowledge. a minispool might help cut down on the machine time, and make it simpler?

I hadn't thought about mini spools. Do they exist for the 8.4"?

Not that I have seen.

doubt theyre out there, but thinking you might be able to mod something larger thats 30 spline to fit the carrier.

I'll check into it, but this is Jacks truck. I think he would be more inclined to find an existing spool, and machine it for out application, than using a mini spool. If nothing will work, he might pop for a used ARB and just leave it engaged (although, that extra money could go to better use on other parts of the vehicle right now). What about taking a spool from a mini 8", and redrilling the mounting holes for the ring gear? Is the snout long enough to work in the 8.4?

Did you ever call Jay to see if he could help you guys in any way?

id just run a welded carrier man.

called him. not sure he was catchin what i was throwing down and with the parts being special order i wasnt going to push much. its going to be cheaper than i expected, so i may just order em and see where it goes when i pick em up.

Just weld it. From what I understand, spools are easy to bend and the factory carrier holds up better. Search "bent spool" in the regular Toy section. There are a few threads out there.

why not run a detroit locker? i just put one in my 8.4 and it might as well be a spool. coasting around turns is about the only time it unlocks. even touch the gas and your leaving rubber behind.

chances are this is going in a dezert racer and you need to know exactly how the rig is going to react. doesnt get more predictable and reliable, than a spool.

i agree, but if a spool isn't available than a detroit is about the next best thing as far a reliability. or get a 9 inch and run a spool.

id welded the bastard up before running a detroit.

any machine shop worth anything should be able to make either a mini spool or a full spool. i could make you either, but it would be 4-5 weeks due to current projects.

I'll see if they have any input for something like this. Thanks for all of the input guys.

I tried calling branik yesterday, but no one anwswered. I'll try again today. We are also going to see about getting ahold of a 9.5" spool, and machining it down to fit, but we'll see if that'll work. Either way, I'll update this thread when we find out anything else.
