Not the mini spool, the full spool. Did some searching and didn't come up with much.

I think Mr. Miller did. :flipoff2:

If a detroit is strong enough to fit inside a stock carrier, then why wouldn't a mini spool work?

Now, tear it apart and weld it!:flipoff2:

I really dont see much of a disadvantage to a mini spool in a 14. afterall the detroit doesnt replace the carrier either.

Two things, does welding actually work? Have heard lots of different opinions. And how strong are the mini spools?

The problem with mini's on other diffs is you still have the stock carrier. Thats really not an issue with a 14 bolt. I cant comment on welding. ;)

Was reading a post you made awhile back about welding the coloradok5 way and how it didn't work. Do you have any pics of yours and or details of what you did?

I tried welding it the ColoradoK5 way:

However, the welds dented in after a couple of runs and I was getting a lot of play.

So, I welded the spiders to each other and now it works just like a spool.

I too was concerned with welding mine so after I did it, and before I hit the trail, I tried to destroy it. In double low, with 45" tires and a 425 CID Caddy, I couldnt break it. I really tried hard too. I still havent broke it, and am pretty sure now that I wont. I do have a spare just in case, since its super easy to swap out a 14 bolt diff, but leave it in the tow rig on most runs.

I used 7018, 300 degrees of pre-heat, and wrapped it in some leather gloves and rags for the cool down. Burrying it in sand would work better. I have been told by some old timers that using inconel rod works alot better, so that is what I will try next time.

I have done this with my 14 bolt. works great... I haven't noticed any play in the gears, though I have been concerned about the same problem.. I however did mine a little different than the colorado4x4 article explains...So possibly that is why I am not having the same problem..Or I just haven't had it yet.

I plan on scrounging another couple of spiders from the yard and welding them up, just in case I blow one out.

Use some 7018, I have some friend that had welded front and rears and never have broken. If you are not sure about your welding someone would probaly weld it up for you.;)

I agree the 7018's are a good choice to weld the spiders, when I did mine I welded a little at a time as to not get the gears too hot all at once and then let them cool down I spent a whole day, because I would weld a bit then just leave it. I have had the same 14 bolt for 6 years now and it's been turning 54'' tall 20'' wide combine tires the whole time. If you take your time and do it just right a welded 14 bolt is bulletproof. I have tried to destroy the rearend and it just keeps sayin is that all you got:mad:

Uhhh...I just posted a ? about where to find a spool -sorry -too many posts came up when I did a search on 14 bolt (1299 posts). You mentioned a mini spool for the 14 bolt...where do I find one? I don't want to weld (yet).
Thanks

We've welded 2 14-bolts the K-5 method and it's worked well so far. One is JoshC's Scout with 38x14.5's. He's had no problems after 3 trips to the 'Con. The other is under my daughers Scout with 16x38.5's but it hasn't left the garage yet. Full report to follow ;)

Umm, how about a search for "14 bolt spool"? Ya know, the more words you use, the less results you get. :flipoff2:

So, the other day, I was thinking about welding the teeth AND the spiders to their pinions. It would be a little trickier than just one or the other as far as setup, but.....

Thanks reddwarf...I was wondering who would be the first to nail me on that...@nus :flipoff2: :D
Did a search on that too...but thanks -I got the info I needed.
