I got this Miller a couple of months ago and I still haven't learned it like my old welder. It is set up for gas.

I am welding 3/16 steel control arm brackets onto my axle tubes (D30). What is a good setting, wire speed and wire. The welder came with .024 wire, but I think it is too thin.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks

SeanP

yeah you should be using at least .030, .035 if that machine will allow it without going to flux core,

as for the brackets, do a bunch of tests to see the penetration you get on 3/16, don't do it up on the axel and find out the hard way:p ;)

Dont run .035. Stick with .030. You'll get better penetration out of that machine. I cant help you with settings, I have a 200. But yep, start with their recommended settings then do some welds and destructive tests. That'll give you the setup for your machine and you, without question

stick with .030. Do some penetration testing on scraps and go from there.

my buddies 175 has a chart on the inside of it where the wire goes. we use that as as startibng point and go from there.

Open the door on the welder and look for the hottest setting that welder has. That will be the one you need. Probably max power and 75-80% max wire speed I would guess.

thanks guys! Definately practicing on some 3/16s scraps first. Also, I was warned not to get the axle tubes too hot or they might deform a bit. Just an inch or two at a time on each side.

Oh yeah, I know :flipoff2: :flipoff2: for welding on my D30. I really want to see how far I can push it before it breaks catasrophically, then it's off to get quotes from Dean the Dana 60 guy!

Yep best thing is to pratice welding the same type and thickness of metal first, so you waond be grinding it back off.:)
