Holy christ fuck. Sighted in my in new condition M77 "All Weather" 30-06 w/ Timney trigger today with the hollowed out light weight stock. 30 rounds and my shoulder is aching like a bastid. The thing kicks like a fawking draft horse. Got some nice 3 shot groups that fit under a quarter though. Probably a little much for a white tail but for the price of free and the cost of a scope I will not complain. Thanks Dad

I've shot a variety of guns, two of the worst kicking guns I ever shot were 30-06.
One was an old Savage 110, the other was a left handed Remington 700 BDL.

I've shot other 30-06 that weren't bad, but due to the stock design/shape, and weight those about kicking my shoulder off.

Shooting off a bench can get uncomfortable after a while. I bought a lead sled for range time since all my hunting rifles use light synthetic stocks with factory pseudo recoil pads. I don't consider myself recoil shy, but a good rest makes a long day at the range more fun.

Both the SO and I shoot a M77 in 7 R.M. composite stocks with Limbsaver recoil pads. SO is 6' 160lbs. and would shoot her gun all day long. To add to Norm's comment, I would add that a quality recoil pad is worth it's weight in gold imho.

The M77 is known for it's Recoil Delivery System. I'm pretty sure that's a Ruger patented "feature"

Sometimes an extra pound or two (and a gas system!) is worth it :p

Get a BAR, your shoulder will thank you.

My pre-64 model 70 .30-06 is a dream to shoot, but it weighs almost 10 pounds and has some sort of pad on it. I shot my uncles post-64 .30-06 with a synthetic stock a few years ago and it was just as bad as a mosin nagant. It couldnt have weighed over 7 lbs though.

Think a lightweight M77 is bad, try a Weatherby Weatherguard in .300WBY.

Buy a Hogue overmould stock. they are well worth the $140 or so.

They tame the recoil? Theres 2 versions, one is 140 or so the other is 250. Is the difference noticable or even warranted for a hunting rifle?

A small sand bag between your shoulder and the mule/draft horse/ ignorant fawking gun goes a hell of a long way when sighting in.

Yep... :D

No sympathy from this curmudgeon as it was a personal choice by the OP to buy a large bore with a light stock.

My .45-70 Sharps weighs in at 13lb, and I can handle a 60+ round shooting fest provided I have my 3/8 cheater pad on the steel butt plate. :D :D

I shot a dozen rounds through my 50bmg yesterday offhand with my no-pad PRS stock so my sympathy is limited. I don't even have a bruise, thank God for muzzle brakes. :D
