I am in the process of converting my DRW dana 60 hubs to SRW style for my crawler. The truck is fairly light and trail only. I have read all about it in the dana 60 bible and I am capible of doing the work. First ? does anyone know someone who has done this, or have done it themselves and can maybe provide some pics other than the ones in the tech article? Also If its reccomended to weld a ring around the tabs that the wheel studs go though to increase strength? Any feedback would be helpful. Any horror stories about doing this would be appreciated as well. Im just trying to get as much info as possible to do the job rite. pics would help to. Thanks

i just had mine machined down and had a 1/2" plate water jetted out and welded it on, i havent ran it yet, and i wont til spring but they look pretty stout. i bought the dorman 610-303 wheel studs like mentioned in the dana 60 bible and they fit well. i can take some pics of them but they are identical to the ones in the bible. im sure someone has more experience with them than me on here tho.

Sweet. Thats good to know. I was going to use some 7/16 plate I had lying around for the ring. The wheel studs were something I was curious about as well. Thanks for the info. Getting any info people have with doing this is helpful. More will help.

I did it on my last K5 and did not add any plate. I think you should add the plate even if you don't weld it on. The "star" surface is not quite enough diameter for the wheel mounting surface, so adding the plate just provides better backing for you wheel. It was 2004 when I did this, but I don't remember changing studs. IIRC, I drilled the holes to fit the studs I had.

I've turned down a couple sets of hubs for guys near me. I never seen these guys before or since so I have no idea how they worked. I turned my a set down for myself but the d44 is stil under the truck.

Good info guys thank you. Ya I am for sure going to weld a plate on and just get longer studs. Thanks for the help, it sounds like a good idea to do this it saves me a few hundred dollars. Also I still havent herd any bad things about this, major breaks in such, so that makes me happy. Cool. Anyone else got anything

If you check around, usually you can find someone who wants to swap. You just end up paying for the shipping one way. On my current rig I got lucky and found someone local who had them sitting in a pile of parts.

even when you turn down the DRW hubs, there is plenty of metal left there so i dont think its gonna break

Ya I know that there is alot of metal left over after turning them. The thing I was really concerned about was the wheel mounting tabs. But Im going to cut a ring and weld it to the tabs and drill holes in it for the studs. Im sure this will make it strong enough for what Im doing.
