I'm thinking about ripping the a/c out of the truck (86 hardbody). I don't have doors, it's still R-12, and I think I could use the space for a second alternator or just leave it empty and have a cleaner engine compartment. Any thoughts? Am I going to regret it or make a big mess?

Remove the evaporator and other unneeded parts, keep the compressor and wiring. Mod the compressor for OBA and install a airtank under the cab.
Install a pressure switch between the AC switch and the compressor. Then you can just press the switch when you start wheeling and the tank stays pressurized and ready for lockers, inflation and camping duties.
Rather than putting in a second alternator just put in a bigger one. GM alts have been favorites for this mod.
The GM CS-130 and CS-130D are popular and easy to find.

IIRC, the nissan compressor is oiled by the system, so you would need to have an oiler before it, and an oil separator after it, plus I don't htink it has the volume. Personally, I would remove it and put a york in. If you do decide to get rid of it, I may be interested.

I'll check into it and post what I find. A york is another good option, I'll search that as well.

The volume is not an issue if you have a good airtank. But a York is of course more powerful then the Nissan compressor.

That only works until you run the tank out of air (which won't take long), then you're at the mercy of the compressor again.
