: UCA Bushing Q

I'm in the middle of sourcing parts to run a 3 link on the DD...
I want to long arm it, for comfort on the street, but having seen radius arms in action, I'm not a fan of it and I'm keeping the D30 unfortunately (I'm not going to blow it up with 33x10.5 pizza cutters anyway)

I do not want to butcher/redo the exhaust on my XJ to run the upper on the passenger side, which would be the stupid easy thing to do... but my pipes are mint

I know Opie has done it, but there is NO way in hell I am going to run a 10mm bolt for my upper control arm, and since I don't want to make the choice of running the upper on the passenger side, I'm stuck with the cast mount on the D30...

Can I run a poly bushing in the cast mount without the sleeve in it to cheat and up the bolt size? I realize the sleeve is there so that I do not over-tighten the bolt squashing the bushing and hindering flex, the way I would compensate is how Breeze Industries (they sell zook shit here in Canuckastan) sells their shackles, essentially double nutting them.

So I could tap my upper control arm to the specified bolt size and that way I can only tighten it so much before the bushing starts deflecting, and toss a nut on it for good measure. I think it would work, but I'm not sure how the poly bushings are designed for the OEM application.

Reading that made my head hurt.

Why can't you just drill out the hole on the upper mount and getting a bushing with that excepts a bigger bolt?

I guess I could try to hog it out a touch with a hole saw, but I'd like to keep the integrity of the mount if possible...

Option two now that you mentioned that, would be to drill the bushings out and make a sleeve out of some DOM, that could definitely be done...

I forgot that the bushing is integrated into the mount. Haven't dealt with D30's in a long time, sorry.

with a DD on 33's does the 10mm bolt really come across as that much of an issue?

do this if its that big a deal for you.... or you could source a krawler joint that the rockkrawler 3 link uses, it bolts into the cast uca mount on the d30 and it should be an upgrade in bolt size

btw why do you think you have to redo your exhaust to do a passenger upper?.... mines all stock, and even though my upper is mounted to the unibody you could still build an upper mount into a crossmember that would maintain factory exhaust...

Got a pic?
Looks awful tight even if I chop out some of the floor...

I was planning on mounting it to the cross member

i have pics of mine to the unibody.... theres lots of room though i dont see how a crossmember would be an issue..

Thanks for those pics Doug! I'm not sure if I'm going to run the LCA right under the unibody frame like you have... since I am going to lack some clearance...

By positioning like you have, that would definitely be easier to package the upper, as it would give me way more vertical separation at the frame side, I took a look under my XJ on my lunch break and there is definitely a lot of room if I incorporate a mid arm setup like you have... it's floating in the back of my mind now.

I sent Timmay a PM, apparently he's managed to get the upper on his cross member without chopping up the floor... but I can't find pics,

There is a Moog P/N for TJ 30s that is essentially a 12 mm hole. However, through the use of "nipples" inside the bore, Moog sets it up for the factory 10 mm bolt.

You can drill/ream out those little nipples without taking any material from the parent sleeve. Now you've got 12 mm bolts to work with.

Not a huge difference ... but it's one way to keep the OE sized stuff. If you can't find the Moog numbers, let me know and I'll try to hunt it down in the catalogs.

mid arm is where its at, high clearance and it still gets the SHIT done :flipoff2:
