: prerunner auto speedo drive...
Booger Weldz 11-21-2009, 01:19 PM so i need to put my electric speed sensor off my prerunner tailhousing into the gear driven case...this is gonna be hard to explain without pics!
im looking at this and assuming i need to cut down the gear driven case plastic gear shaft and re slot it to match the shorter shaft/gear off the taco sensor(it wont work the gear is smaller). then put it in the tacoma sensor housing...also looks like i need to cut off the bolt hole and mod the housing to fit better on the gear driven case??
anyone?
i lost the email from jim regarding all this unfortunately when i had to kill my email from spam attack
Booger Weldz 11-21-2009, 01:20 PM i wish the plastic gear would just come off so i could swap those and be done :rasta:
Booger Weldz 11-21-2009, 01:26 PM sucks im using this sortof rare at this point prerunner 2wd auto adapter stuff and not the 4wd most guys are using, but im assuming toyota would have used the same sensor...also the guys with abs are just using a vss from marlin and splicing into the abs circuit which my truck does not have
Booger Weldz 11-21-2009, 01:35 PM does anyone even know someone who is using the 2wd prerunner auto tranny in front of gear driven cases like me???
jester_motorsports 11-21-2009, 04:36 PM You're running an Inchworm Lefty case, right? If so, pm Jamie (SAR_Squid79) on TTORA. He did a Prerunner to 4x4 conversion on his truck and he's running a Lefty case too. I believe he's running that same adapter that you are.

No problem. If there's anything I can get you through Toyota, let me know.
Booger Weldz 11-21-2009, 05:19 PM youre right, he did the same as me(but used a lefty) but theres no pics/description of the speedo mods...:(
sbechtold 11-21-2009, 07:24 PM On my FJC I used Jim's (Inchworm) adapter (http://www.inchwormgear.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=1010&osCsid=64c74f6b55d01608538052455c884591) which allowed me to use the guts of my chain driven speed sensor with a gear driven case. Then I wired the speed sensor directly to the speedo. Here is a pic of the adapter. Don't know if it will work for you.

ErikB 11-21-2009, 09:06 PM Just re-read you post.
If you're running off the gear case I think all you need is Marlin's adapter on the cable drive that's already on your t-case.
Inchworm's is meant to convert the "large" style t-case VSS to fit the "small" style hole in the gear case. I don't know if the prerunner tranny VSS will work with his adapter.
Here is the link to his adapter, and there is a link there to the instructions.

Anyway, if Marlin's will work, its only $10 more and you don't have to dick around with converting anything so I'd go that route.
Booger Weldz 11-22-2009, 12:07 PM its sooo easy guys, you wont believe it! you just cut down the longer shaft of the gear drive case sending unit, grind a slot in it to engage the mechanism inside for the speed signal and shove it in the tacoma sending unit...all the stock wiring, etc, though it looks like i have to lengthen the harness a bit to reach
im not sure why people have to buy the marlin unit(i had it on my silver tacoma) or the inchworm adapter stuff when this is free??
Inchwormgear 12-09-2009, 10:25 AM The reason you can use the PreRunner electric speed sensor with a Gear Driven Transfer Case is that the housing is basically the same as the cable driven speedo housing. Tacomas, FJ Cruisers, etc. have an electric speed sensor housing that won’t fit in a gear driven transfercase. These folks need the Inchworm Speed Sensor Adapter. Give us a call with questions. :)
