: D60 with Dana 44 hubs?

So I've been reading Billavista's D60 tech, and I came across this.

Another method is a Chevy 60 knuckle, a 60 outer shaft, a Chevy 44 spindle, a 1/2" thick spacer/adaptor to bolt to the 60 knuckle and bolt the spindle to, then you use a 44 hub, rotor, backing plate, and caliper, and a lockout can be bought from Warn, its the one they are using in their rear full float conversions, same 30 spline as the 60 shaft, and fits in the 44 hub. They are running no spindle bearings, you do end up trimming a little off the spline end of the outer shaft, cause its to long, but it all goes together, and the only thing the people running it have broken is a hub.

I've heard of this set-up before, never seen it though. Talked extensively with a guy in WA that makes a kit like that but wants $900 for it!! What he does is make a spacer, bore out a big bearing D44 spindle till the bearing fits, adapts D60 lockout hub internals into a D44 lock-out. Not sure if that’s the right way to do it but that’s what he told me!

I'm runnin a 5x5 bolt pattern, and have a D44 under the front right now. I did some searching but didn't come across anyone having actually done it, anyone have any info or pics? I know I wouldn't be able to run 35 spline outers with this setup but I'm not worried about that. It would just be nice as I could use all my current D44 outers, I could run 15" rims and would already have the bolt pattern I want when I go to a 60.

As for the hubs, I'd grab a set of the warn 30 splines for the full float rear 44 kits.

If you provide me the SRW GM D60 hubs and black bird customs caliper stands, I will trade you my GM D60 5 lug hubs/rotors and caliper stands. Then you can run 35 spline if you want.

Thanks for the offer man, but even then the bolt pattern on the hubs is 5x5.5 isn't it? I'm looking for a true 5x5, which I already have my front D44 hubs and rotors redrilled for. I don't even know if you can squeeze a 5x5 pattern onto a D60 hub without lugnut to hub interferance. whats the diameter of the hub at the wheel mout surface?

Are you talking about the JK, WJ 5x5 bolt pattern? Standard aftermarket wheels have a 4.25" ID. They clear D60 hubs no problem.

Yeah, it's going under my WJ. The 5x5 wheels must not be standard then, I had to grind a little off my 16x7" soft 8's to get over the dana 44 hub, my Blade 2's are the same way.

*EDIT*

Found the blades on summit, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/USW-26-5850/

Tell me you arent doing this to keep some realy oddball wheels?

I have two sets of these "oddball" wheels, the 44 has new brakes and wheel bearings are new, and would be transferring over to the 60 as well. This would also allow me to run 15" wheels without brake issues like 60's generally have, and I already have all the machine work done to run the bolt pattern.

It's not set in stone, an idea I'm exploring.

From reading your build thread I see you already have a 9" that was 5 x5.5. Think it would be easier to sell your front D44 to someone (either 5x5 or 5x5x.5) and just build a 5x5.5 front 60.

Wheels are cheap and custom stuff is expensive. I bet in your exploring that the required spacers hubs and spindle maching are about the same cost as a new set of not odball wheels.

Alright thanks for that guys.

Besides those telling me not to do it, I'm still looking for any tech on the swap, I don't know who wrote those original posts that were compiled into the d60 tech article so I cant ask them. I'm not set on doing this and blowing everyone's advice off, but the concept still tickles my curiosity so I want to figure it out.
