: Are there laws against outdoor showering/dumping shower water in JV?

I'm planning things out for KOH 2010, I have an outdoor shower on my toy hauler and I have the ability to bring enough fresh water to last me a couple weeks but I only have 80 gallons of gray water capacity. I'm wondering if there's any law or ordinance against dumping shower water or using an outdoor shower in JV.

I'd like to use the outdoor shower and leave all my gray water capacity for the kitchen sink if I can get away with it.

Its against the law to drain any RV tank in the the OHV area, but I dont recall seeing anything about outdoor showers. Most people still dump their grey tank, but it is against the law.

Last year at KOH there were a couple of different pump trucks cruisin around doing black/grey tank pumping and fresh water refilling for pretty decent prices.

Yeah I know, it took me 2 days to get the guy to empty my tanks. He charged me $25, didn't empty my gray tank, didn't close my black tank valve when he was done he tried to fill my fresh water tank by hooking up to the city water connection. That's when I caught him and stopped him.

I'd rather not have to worry about that this year. :)

Sweet. Don't get me wrong, the guy last year was a work of art, when I found him pumping one of the shitters out with the hose in one hand and a sandwich in the other I knew he was way out of my league.

People, PLEASE do not dump your greywater on the lake. You'd be surprised at what's growing in there and the kids and dogs running around don't need to be exposed to that, plus nobody deserves to have to deal with the stench that even comes from the grey water that's 1/2 day old or older.

As for showering outside, I know that in many public lands, it's supposedly illegal to have anything that is not condiered "biodegradable" (what that standard is, I don't know) on the ground. Many detergents/soaps fall into that category. So, it might be an issue but in reality, are they really going to bust someone for showering outside?

Here's an idea...camp far away from us, shower naked with no curtain, they won't come near you.

Out at JV or wherever I'm camping at - I use a product called Camp Suds - biodegradable soap that works great as shampoo & body wash, or even for washing dishes. That and other similar products available at REI, Sport Chalet, etc. etc.

I always see many campers dumping there water on the road out. Always several trails of water. Maybe It's just there fresh water and not gray. Maybe It's dust control.

I usually open the fresh water tank when I'm done.....it might look like grey water from a distance as my drain valve is 1" line.....

alot of people will drain the fresh water so there not carrying the weight for the trip home...

If you are going to shower outside, definitely think about using biodegradable substances and products. Not for nothing, but they apply a classification to the used waters such as gray and black for a reason.

Think like this - if you wouldn't want to drink it, please don't let the earth soak it up either. :smokin:

I think the outdoor shower is o.k. if you use the camp suds or other boi soap. For extra insurance you could bring a 6 dollar inflatable kiddie pool to stand in. If you are bringing a 5thwheel , RV, whatever with a shitter that will see use bring 3 gal or more of the best tank treatment you can find. Don't use the cheap shit, spend some dough here and save everyone from the odor. It usually takes a gallon at start then 1 every other day to keep it in check. And it'll smell like hell all week if you try and skimp in this department. It sucks loaning this stuff to people so you don't have to smell their shitter cause they didn't bring any or used the cheap stuff and not enough of it.

I also dump my fresh water tank as I leave camp. One time as I was leaving Stonyford (Mendocino National Forest) I got pulled over and lectured. This ranger said he was very upset about what I was doing and that it was illegal, ultimately he let me go with a warning because the two dirt bikers passed us on a county road that did not allow green sticker bikes. He clearly stated that nothing can be dumped, no fresh water tanks included. I am not saying what is right or wrong or what is legal or not, but I did get stopped and lectured about that.

Maybe the National Forest has different regulations? Maybe I was doing something stupid? I don't do that anymore.

I dump my fresh as well......never been an issue.....

On the KOH trip though I'm sure I will run out or whatever I have left I will need for the 30 hour drive home :p

On another note about outdoor showers.....Is it OK if I have a spectator row for when the wife showers :flipoff2:

I can't find a link or the backup right now, but I read somewhere once that the only things that are legal to dump on a highway (this may not apply to BLM land) are water and chicken feathers. I assume they mean clean water, though I can't remember that detail, but I do remember that it was liquid water only, no ice. Crazy laws.:laughing:

You know, now that you mention that I remember hearing that in drivers ed many MANY years ago (water and chicken feathers). I need to look for that so I can print that out next time I go camping. I hated hauling the fresh water home the few times I have done that! Thanks :grinpimp:

Found it: 23114. (a) Except as provided in Subpart I (commencing with
Section 393.100) of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations
related to hay and straw, a vehicle shall not be driven or moved on
any highway unless the vehicle is so constructed, covered, or loaded
as to prevent any of its contents or load other than clear water or
feathers from live birds from dropping, sifting, leaking, blowing,
spilling, or otherwise escaping from the vehicle.

Now I am wondering if National Forest has any different laws about the "clear water" than the CVC???

Cool. Like I said, BLM may have a different opinion. Just wait till you get back to Old Woman Springs to drain your fresh water tanks.

Any idea how much he charges? I'm coming all week and have never been remote dumped before. How much should I expect to pay to have both gray and black dumped and fresh refilled???

In one of the thousands of other KOH threads Jeff mentioned that it would be $35 for dump and fill.
