: Interesting Saginaw Pump conversion
texican 09-27-2002, 03:45 PM First off, let me give credit for this idea to Chad Smithson (his truck) He saw the JT outfitters Saginaw pump bracket I installed a few weeks ago. he and I had been discussing switching his 60 over to the Saginaw, the OEM pump really struggled with the 35's, and the ARB.
Anyway, I removed the OEM pump, and the Smog pump.
Then re routed the alt. belt to go around the Water pump, crank and the alt. The Saginaw, also goes around the WP, Crank and pump.
One of the big problems on FJ60's and the 40's of the era, is when the smog pump dies, the water pump quits and before the driver realizes, he's got a cracked head.
texican 09-27-2002, 03:50 PM Shot from the Alt side of the engine.
BTW if you want to grab this belt for an emergency, in case your smog dropped out on you, you could drive in with no PS. the Gates part # is TR 22495

texican 09-27-2002, 03:55 PM Last Pix, drove it this afternoon, Saginaw pump don't struggle at all, even with the ARB.
BTW I did the pump mods on my truck, that West Tx Off Road have on their website,( go here http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.com/powersteering.html ) WOW, great big difference in assist. I can turn the 35's with one finger at idle now, well worth the 45 minutes!
Might be a bit too much boost on the highway, takes some getting used to.

RHINO 09-27-2002, 04:28 PM that looks mysteriously like my homemade brackets. cruiserheads think alike i guess.
texican 09-27-2002, 04:51 PM Do you know what the OEM application is on that strange looking pump pulley?
Don't think I have ever seen a 4 bolt Saginaw pulley, I've seen older ones with one center bolt............
I suppose it is wide enough for the big LC belt?
BTW somone jacked your radiator!

csmithson 09-27-2002, 05:04 PM So, you figured out how to engage the ARB?
Can't wait to drive it.
Oh, and :flipoff2:
RHINO 09-27-2002, 05:10 PM Don't think I have ever seen a 4 bolt Saginaw pulley
pretty cool huh? i have 3 sizes to play with i find the medium one(pic) to be best. it cam off a volvo, early '80's i think??
i got my rad. paid to have a new core made, still has the four rows but now i got 14 fins per inch. should be real nice in the heat.
i still need a driver side mirror, looks like one of the pigs in the hoard has one if you want to sell it.
texican 09-27-2002, 05:23 PM That was you?
I had to dump my inbox, and it got deleted, there is only one outside mirror that looks oem. and it is cracked at the base, it is on the two tone green and white one.
One of the pigs has box's and boxs of parts in it, which I have never gone thru, when I get around to searching thru I'll keep my eyes open.
Have you seen these?
